I have a question. My mare has had 3 healthy babies with her old owner, with absolutly no problems. She has speed bloodlines, and is an ex- barrel racer. However she is 19. We were thinking of breeding her, she is breeding sound, in great shape. Do you think it would be worth it, or would she even take?

thought id bump this because ive seen a lot of posting of horses that do not at all represent the breed or advocate the quality of the breed. So make sure you arnt breeding your horse just because you think they would make a cute foal pop out. That is one of the top 10 horse buying mistakes!! AHH

Horses should be bred because they have outstanding qualities to pass on.

The fact that you love it or think it would have a really cute foal is not an outstanding quality, to consider to breed your mare or stallion.

I answered yes to all of them...however my mare is 19 also and I have little history on her except her bloodlines, so no, I won't breed her and risk her (TOO much risk, if you ask me). I have been toying with the idea...back and forth..for a while now, as there is a stallion coming that I can use for free (absolutely gorgeous...sigh...) and if my mare was 10 years younger, I certainly would go for it.

For this one....
Does my mare represent a good example of the breed?
I advise getting at least 3 expert opinions....do not trust yourself to evaluate your mare.

Get people who are well known and respected Judges, as well as successful Professional trainers, in your chosen breed or equestrian sport/activity, are good choices to evaluate your mare and give you their professional opinion as to her quality, faults and breeding worthy ness.
Be willing to pay them for their time and expert opinion....if you have to take your mare to them (be it at their place or arranging to meet them somewhere else like at a show) be willing to do it..... IMHO...it is time & money well spent!
