I think a better list would be this:
*Honestly* ALL of the bad things about your mare. Like everything from not being caught, to bad with the farrier, to poor confo, to not loading, to a bumpy head, etc.
And Honestly* all the good things about her.
If you have a bad list, well, you shouldnt be breeding your mare because no doubt luck will give the foal all the possible bad things.

If Owen was registered and a mare he would be perfect for breeding, but i dont know if his parents are registered so i can't register him.... and he's not a mare...

True to a point....not being caught, bad with the farrier, not loading are all training issues. Not "breeding" issues.

Though if the mare cannot do those things, you cannot expect the foal to learn "good" things from momma.

I just have to look at the thread title and say no. I don't care if the vet who vetted Ace said she would throw nice babies: I am not going to risk my horse that way.

Besides, IMO, neither of my horses are breeding material... and I know it.

If I ever want a foal, I'll save money and buy one that I KNOW is what I want rather than breed and risk getting what I DON'T WANT... and of course the possibility of not only losing foal but losing my mare as well.

Good thread and some very good points. Having grown up on a farm where the main income has come from the sale of purebred animals sinse 1835, I would like to point out one fact that a lot of people miss and that is culling. What will you do with an animal that is not up to scratch? An example would be the King ranch that had a lot to do with the development of the Quarter Horse. They ran a large brood mare band and would only keep mares that had proven themselves with ranch work in it. Foals that did not measure up were not kept. A "backyard" breeder with one or two mares will not have a selection of foals to choose from and can not hope to be able to improve the breed to the same extent.
