Ollie is starting to shed his winter coat but to prevent all the messy shedding and to just get him looking nice I want to shave that winter coat off! lol. He looks like such a bum with his winter coat and I hate it! It's still in the 20-30 around here, maybe lower, and we just had a snow storm so I'm wondering if it would be ok to clip him of his winter coat or should I just leave it be till it warms up? He has a blanket so he has warmth but is that enough?

I would not want to unless he was inside....ours in the heated barn I find are okay, but normally they are blanketed anyway.

Keep in mind, being bay he will prob be a VERY unattractive colour at first! Just keep grooming religously and spray him with healthy hair care's moisturizer too and thats the best you can do!

I wanted to clip my horse as well, but due to the fact that he's in a heated barn where the lights are kept on longer at night, he's shedding out pretty well. He's lost most of his coat already. So you could, but it's getting pretty late to clip IMO. but people do clip in the summer so... You're choice. |

We clip in the summer...I am waiting to do my own horse since he lives outside! I clip when it is warmer and he wears a sheet or blanket. It isn't too late to me, just depends on facilities

Have you kept the blanket on him all winter? If you have, then I definately wouldn't mess with it, if he still has a long winter coat with a blanket, then he isn't that warm. I would just leave him. Take a shedding stone and use some muscle and get out all of the loose hair. This late in the winter, it wouldn't be a very good idea to clip him.

He is not turned out 24/7 so would that be fine? You said he will look unattractive so are you talking about with his winter coat or when he sheads his coat or if I clip it??

If you clip it. Don't get me wrong, we still do it....but it takes bay's a few weeks to start to look normal again! He will prob come out a mousy colour for now... They all do! I don't know offhand how cold 20-30 is except it is below zero! lol, I still worry bout them getting cold. Shrek is out 24/7 so won't be till may/june when I clip him, he looks SO much better! I LOVE it!

I think I'll just wait till it gets warmer here. I'm going up there on Saturday to do nothing but groom him and just getting him looking good for our show in March.
