I couldn't agree MORE. Too many people breed just because they have a mare at a breedable age, and a stallion that is readily available. You have to think of the foal's future, and not your own personal reasons.

ok, to clear it all up , we did NOT raise him with us and the mares we bred him with was his old owners, he is a very nice stud and we want to breed him because the last horse we bred him to died from colic and we are ready for a foal we want it and we have all agreed about it... if circumstances do change then we already know someone who will be willing to take a foal whenever and she is sure of it too. I know they do not have the best conformation but who said i wanted a foal with perfect conformation, Thank you all for your opinions though!

I still don't think your getting it.

There is always the chance you will have to sell him/her, even if you have this lady on the side. You want the best chances you can get for the foal to go to a good home. This may just be me, but I would never buy a horse with bad conformation. Sorry, but it is asking for waaaay too many health problems down the road, not to mention altering the horses ability to perform. And why put another unwanted horse into the world? What if the foal turns out to be a filly, and someone tries to breed her down the road (or even a colt that never gets gelded?)? Your setting the foal up for failure by not caring what's its conformation will be like. I know you said you want it to just be a trail horse, but that's what everyone says. It is just NOT fair! You have got to put the foal's needs before your wants, like I already said. Conformation is one of the number one things you need to be looking at in breeding, not just because you want to do it. What if this baby comes out with major faults? I know you will still "love" it, but you have got to look at the bigger picture.

Breeding these two horses would be very irresponsible to me, but I all I can do is state my opinion. Whatever you do, think it over very hard, and put your feelings aside, even if that is a hard thing to do.

Is there some reason you are against buying a foal already on the ground? Why do you feel the need to produce one, if you admittedly say that it won't be anything special? Why not make some foal out there in need of a home your special horse?

Neither of those horses is breeding quality in my mind. I can't understand why anyone would want to breed inferior horses? If you had a nice mare and stud I'd say go for it.

Geld him, he has no good traits to pass on. I'm a little lost. We have bred a few mares this year, but they are under lights. So if he is 2 or 3 and you bred him already are you saying he was 1 or 2 when you bred him?
