I woudlnt breed these two horse's either. They are ok horse's, but noting that would cause them to be in demand. Does one have special talents? Like a barrel racer..or jumper? Breed doesnt always matter with these sports.

Well, I would not breed the stud just because you plan on gelding him. That's a bit of an oxymoron. You're gelding him for a reason. Breeding him before gelding him kind of defeats the purpose I would think.

And even if not, he's very young and unproven, and an entirely different breed than the mare. If you really, really wanted one foal of his, I would at least breed him to a nice, proven mare of his own breed instead.

But Equine Repro said it well:

Even then there is no guarantee that it won't end up in a slaughterhouse, but it will certainly help. While you may love your horses and want to try and preserve them, look at them objectively and recognize that a foal as a result of that cross probably isn't in the best interest for all concerned. If you want the opportunity to raise a foal, just go to an auction yard. You can usually pick one up for well under $100.00 <sad sigh>...and you may very well guarantee it a life. And remember, if you're not part of the solution, you don't want to be part of the problem...

Really, if you want a nice gaited foal or just a foal period to raise, there are tons on the market that are registered, often have nice lines, and great conformation for very little cash. It would be cheaper in the long run, you would probably be saving the foal's life, and if something happened, you would have a much more marketable horse.

You could have him collected. Complete his training to see if you really want a foal out of him, and take your time finding the right mare.

That's a good idea. If you're going to geld him but really want to breed him, i would wait to see if that's what you really want to do. Collecting him is a great idea!!

Having him collected to breed isn't going to mean you can ride him with mares though. He still has hormones and he's still a stud. In my opinion that is one horse that should have been cut as a weanling/yearling. Any colts born here that are not stud quality, and many that will be are going to be cut before they leave, just to be sure that people don't end up breeding something that shouldn't be.

WHY did you want to leave him a stud? What do YOU see that he has going for himself to be deemed worthy as a stallion?
