I will probably get flamed , but many times I like the USPS.

It only cost $126.00 to send a Western Saddle to Finland last week via USPS.

I put in Shipping from GA to CA at 30 lbs

Box size 28x20x18 (should be way too big for an english saddle) a little smaller box may save some money

Priority came to 87.20 (2-3 days)

Parcel post was 34.25 (7 days)

Insurance for 500.00 adds another $6.70

It takes 5 days using UPS and that runs 62.00, UPS gives better rates to people with an account, if you just walk into a UPS Store add 20-30.00.

We shipped a big heavy Aussie saddle for only $40 one time, you were definitely over-estimating Just a little packing tip: You obviously want to set the saddle up on it's horn/cantle in the box. If you save grocery bags, stuff a bunch inside a couple of them until they look like pumpkins, then stuff them in the center hole (where the horse's back goes). You can spend a fortune just trying to fill that hole with packing paper. We discovered an easy way to get rid of our extra grocery bags and fill that bottomless pit (my mom and I sell saddles on eBay, we've picked up a few tricks )

Many western saddles will fit into U-Haul Dish Pak box 18x18x28. Get one at the local full service U-Haul store, or order online. Or you can order boxes from ULine online.

Keep the box as small as you can. Saddles get charged dimensional weight, not actual. A 45# western saddle in a box might be charged same as if it weighs 75#.

I had a aussie shipped from OR to AK for $26. Standard shipping from USPS and got it in 10 days. USPS is the way to go.

Yes USPS Is way cheaper then UPS I have used USPS all my life It cost me about $25 parcel post with Delivery Conformation But that is for a little lighter Western saddle. Pony Saddles About $18 or less depending. If you do Priority its a lot more.
