Shipping her off!

Say goodbye to miss Ebony. I dropped her off today at her friend the repro vet for an extended sleepover party.

This year has gone so FAST! She is due around June 10th and she is HUUUUGE. I mean, my farrier about had a cow when he saw how big she was.

I just have to tell you guys, any of you who aren't expereinced breeders but are considering a careful and quality breeding of your mare- seriously look into a foaling out service. I can't even tell you how much of a burden it was off my shoulders the minute I got her unloaded and in a stall. Yes, things can still happen when a mare is foaled out by a vet, but the chances are so much lower, and because I know if something did go wrong, she would be in the best possible place, I know that my worrying is no longer productive, so I get to just relax and shop for baby clothes. It's suprizingly affordable, too. By my calculations I can have her foaled out at a clinic for about as much as it would cost me in lost productivity at work during that time + the farm call/well foal exam I'd have to pay for anyway.

Oh! And look who is featured on the clinic's website! http://www.midwestperformanceequine....equine_004.htm (That's Launa petting Deb, last summer. )

I meant to get photos today before loading up, but then my lawn mower guy dropped by and I had to hop on the opportunity to have someone to help me load her up!

You'll just have to make due with last year's photos.

And this is her at the clinic:

Congratulations on your mare being where you want her but I could not handle not being with my mares when they foal. I could not imagine what it must cost to have them at the clinic for the foaling out.

This is the baby daddy this year:

http://www.myhorse.ca/horseoftheweek...ow20080407.htm

I'm totally ambivalent about girl or boy. No complaints about another nice young lady to add to the future broodmare band or maaaaaaaybe to sell if she's not as nice as Deb, but it would also be nice to have a stallion prospect and get on the road to bringing some money in.

Mostly I just care if it's curly. There's always a chance, breeding heterozygous horses, it will pop out without the curly gene. The foaling clinic knows when I get "the call" that had better be the first thing out of their mouth!

Yeah, but you're probably competent. I, on the other hand, am not. AND I do not have a vet- or any vet locally- I can count on to show up in an emergency. Best to just leave her somewhere they treat her like a queen and sleep through the night knowing I'm doing the best thing I can for her.

Like I said, my math says it's less expensive to send her out than lose the productivity at work (when you work for yourself, you really can't get away with slacking off!)
