I realize that this is an old thread, but I thought I would post my question here rather than start a whole new thread.

Does this work for turn out? If the sheet gets wet does it cause problems such as bacteria growth? I've heard that something like that getting wet could cause the tail to fall out.

I really don't know much about tail bagging of any kind and I'm trying to figure out what would work best for my horses this winter.

I was wondering if sheeting or bagging with a sock would be out of the question since my boys are outside and don't always go in their barn when it rains or snows. Thanks!

I pmed HappyJoy, but I thought I should answer it on here too in case anyone had similar questions.

I have sheets in the tails of 8 horses. All of them are out in a pasture 24/7 and very rarely do any of them loose their sheets, and if they do it's my fault because I should have taken it out and redone it - every 6 weeks to 2 months or so.

They have the sheets in rain or snow, wind and sun, and they all stay in just fine. As for bacteria, I have been doing this for 3 years now and have yet to have a tail fall out. Some of my horses have had sheets in for 3 years (except of course to change them out) with no problems, and with all my horses coming in and out of training, I have probably sheeted 40 horses, all without any problems.

Shotgun, thanks for the info! I've used a slightly different method of sheeting, but wasn't sure I wanted to keep my gelding's tail up this winter. I'm definitely going to go for it as soon as the flies start to die down here.

Has anyone who's used the fleece tubes kept their horses turned out? I remember having a fleece blanket for my old horse that kept him drier than most turnout blankets, even through a pacific northwest winter. I'm thinking that similar fabric would keep the tail dry, too.

I'm glad this got bumped up, people keep asking how to do this!

The fleece ones tend to hold moisture in, they don't hold up as well either, at least with my experience.

Thanks for the step by step instructions. I think that the only real problem I can see with it is that my mom doesnt want to part with any of her sheets.

i don't do anything to my mares tail, and its exact fullness from top to bottom..
and shes field kept too, and her tail is like... floor lenght (or at least REALLY close, lol)
i guess every horses tail is different, and with some (maybe most) horses, it works quite well (i'm just glad i don't have to deal with it. lol)
