Shedding the whole coat?

Hi

our horses are really shedding! but there is still lots of snow and its cold......Some people here tell me I should not brush them too take off the dead hair because it acts as an insulater from the cold. Should I shed them out or not brush them and leave there coat on til it gets warmer???

Thanx in advance

Well, I groom my horse as usual. He has tons of hair coming off but I don't see why keeping the hair that is being shed on will help at all??? If the horse is shedding, its shedding for a reason! But I have never heard of this, so maybe someone else knows more than me I just don't see a purpose for leaving shedded hair on the horse?

Actually, horses shed out depending on the light. The longer the day, the more light there is, the more they'll shed. It doesn't have anything to do with how warm/cold it is. Maybe you should brush it off and invest in a blanket if it's still cold?

Ya take off all the lose hair that is falling off anyway its not going to stay on them anyway its just going to bug them.

Try a shedding blade, they work really well. And then if there coats are getting thin just blanket them at night when its really cold, thats what I am doing, its getting to -24 tonight here sooooooo ya know spring aint coming anytime soon

Use a curry comb as well and curry him lots to get all the hair off. Also can he roll where he is now??? I know my horses cant really roll in there corral since its ice and snow so I take them to the indoor arena to roll in the dirt and they rub alot of there lose itchy winter hair off that way too!!!

Yeah, she could probably still benefit from one. Maybe not as heavy as an outside blanket, though.
