She did it!

Okay. So today i went over and worked Dakoda in the round pen. We have had right lead issues for a long long long time. So i put her d-ring bridle on, and put split reins on to the bit. I ran the reins under her legs, near her chest, and tied them at her weithers. That created my head set creating magiger that i use,and it seems to work on her. First i started her off to the left, and she did nice. A bit spunky at first, she wans't all to willing to keep her head down. After a while she slowed down, relaxed, and kept her head down! Yay! lol. Then i took and made her go the other way. She did not like that at first. The i was like okay, fine, lope. And magically, i think, she took the right lead! I was like whoa. She took it! She took it! I was so proud of her. Then i got on her and just worked her at the walk and trot, after taking my head set thing off. And she kept her head down in a nice headset! I am so happy about that. We just might be able to prove to my mom she can do pleasure! I'll try and get a video up of her.

Thats not a headset creating majigger thats a headset forcing majigger basically exactly like a chambon thats only going to mess up her mouth and true collection. You are just basically forcing her head down instead of teaching her how to balance. A headset comes naturally you shouldnt be forcing it. Something like that is also going to make her head bobble as her muscles flex as she moves and pulls on the bit so its basically sawing her mouth. The only muscles its going to be building the wrong muscles as you are pulling her head down and so she is fighting the pressure instead of pushing herself into the the right frame. There is also a hard contact fighting her mouth constantly anytime she tries to put her head up so its going to cause her to have a hard mouth. You have basically created a chambon with your reins and bit which is basically trying to teach your horse a headset by just tying it down, which does not work. Its going to give you a false and hollow headset that some judges at the smaller open might accept but most wont and as you get higher up in the shows they really wont accept it.

When I round pen my boy he may put his head up first off because he is not old enough to hold the proper frame for a long period of time. Imagine someone giving you 100lbs to hold and then you are NOT allowed to put it down you have to sit there and hold it until they say you are allowed to set it down. It starts to burn and even when you dont think you can hold it anymore you are forced too. A true headset should come from the body moving right. When my boy is moving in the round pen and he starts to push from his haunches you can see his whole body kind of "lift" his back will lift and it moves up through his shoulders and it pushes his neck into a beautiful natural headset without me sticking anything on it to make it that way.

If you only used the headset setup the one time, and that was enough to show her the way, that's fine. If you find you end up relying on it to get her to 1) get the right lead and/or 2) keep her head down, then you *know* you have some holes in the training that need to be addressed first.

Berlunz really nailed it with this

Simply tying the head down doesn't guarantee any of the things she listed - it merely keeps the head down. So, be very very careful in what you are asking for, as the end result may not be exactly what you intended
