Shady horse "rescue" getting their "just deserts"

Well, it looks like the horse "rescue" (where I had adopted my old gal) who gave me so much trouble may be getting their "just deserts"… they are sending out pleas for help and donations because they may lose their farm. I can’t help but feel like they deserve it.

For those of you who don’t know (or may not remember), I ran into trouble with the “rescue” when my senior mare started losing weight mostly due to medical problems. When I notified the “rescue” about the problems, they accused me of starving her and told me I should feed her 30lbs of grain a day! Anyhow, after a big fight (I even received nasty, profane e-mails from the “rescue”) I was given custody of the mare. Pretty silly to give someone a horse if you think they are starving it, eh?

Anyhow, I also heard other stories like mine about this “rescue”…

One family had adopted a 30 year old gelding. When he coliced and died, the “rescue” place a huge notice on her website about how this family basically killed their horse because they didn't have any banamine on hand. Named names and everything! They were also sent many profane emails.

Someone else I talked to, donated a STB mare through them in hope she would find a good home. The mare was pony sized and had never raced. When she was adopted, the donor got an email from the family asking what kind of cart they used to drive her. She told them that the mare doesn't drive, and had never trained to race. The “rescue” told the adoptive family that the donor was a big fat liar and that the pony could drive!

So, it looks like that "rescue" may be getting what they deserve....

Here's even a recent picture of the horse I am "starving"

What goes around comes around! Rescues that behave like that are doing nothing but defaming their own name. Well, for what I have heard, I hope the rescue shuts down, but I hope for the sake of the horses that there is still enough funds to properly take care of them.

Lucky Duck-- do they have a website? could you pm it to me if they do?

your horse looks pretty fat for a starving horse. Maybe send her pic to them!

They sound pretty terrible. What kind of business are they running? They really sent you profane emails? That is crazy!

Yup! They called me every name in the book! If I posted it here, it would just look like: **************************************************

I've heard they have done this to lots of people.

Gretajack, that is what I worry about the most... the horses. Thankfully, my gal has a forever home and I hope the others can find good homes too.

Oh, man, your horse is really starving. No, actually, she looks great! She's really pretty. But did you edit a rope or something out of the pic? Because the left side of her halter's noseband appears to be being lifted up by an invisible force. Or maybe it's just me, lol.

I can't believe those people! Some "rescue." I'm glad they're getting what they deserve. I can't believe they would really send you profane emails like that, that is really mean, not to mention extremely unprofessional.

I personally believe ALL Animal Rescues should have to not only be a licensed business (for profit or not) and strictly regulated by the Federal, State and Local governments in which it is set up.
Yours is not the only story I have heard...
I have a friend who also had a very bad experience with a equine rescue.
She adopted a horse from one and spent a small fortune nursing it back to beautiful condition and health. The horse was her pride and joy and she was just beginning to show it in the local open shows. My friend and her horse (at least she thought it was her horse at the time) had only been to a few shows (which they won the classes they entered) when the women who had the rescue pulled up to her place and in no uncertain terms told her they were taking the horse back because they did not "approve of how she was caring for it"...and since according to the contract my friend signed it was still their horse they could.
My friend was shocked and heart broken....we found out later on that these women sold the horse (which we also found out was registered) for BIG bucks... they would buy registered horses from out of state sales and people who needed to sell their horse/s and adopt them out for people to do what ever it took to get the horse back in shape, looking and riding good then come and take the horse back and sell it to someone else.....they did this to several people before the word got out and they ended up moving their operation elsewhere!

So, I believe strict licensing and regulation is necessary for ALL of these Animal Rescue Centers.
Anyone thinking about adopting a horse from a rescue...while there are good ones out there....please, please, PLEASE..read your contract...and make sure that your adoption does give you full and unrestricted title to the horse your adopting!
If it doesn't then sit down and do some serious thinking...BEFORE you adopt is the only time your head can over rule your heart ....after you adopt it will be too late....

I agree with all of that, Sandra. It just really makes me mad that people would set up a "rescue" solely for the purpose of making money. I'd love to be able to set up a REAL one someday, if I ever have the money. It'd be a good retirement thing, I would imagine.
