I have no problem with them making money...just be up front and HONEST about it!
Don't take advantage of people who truly want a horse and in the process of getting themselves a horse of THEIR OWN want to help out a horse or two.

I really think that the rescues do need to make money...they do, after all need money to keep their operation going and be able to care for the animals they do have.
I have heard about many a rescue who ended up needing rescuing themselves because they got in too deep and did not have enough money to care for the horses they had.
I expect and have no problem with them charging adoption fees, office fees and what not, to help cover their operational expenses....just keep everthing above board and honest is all I ask.

Yeah, I see what you mean. I guess I meant that their main goal should be RESCUING the animals, not making as much money as they can. But of course they do need to make enough money to keep the farm going.
And honesty is definitely the key.

My friend and I had a similar problem but with a lady who take in unwanted cats. We decided to but on a fat & furry cat show, and split ALL the profits with the cat foundation and the local SPCA. Both were all for it and we had recieved alot of donations for prizes from pet stores, feed stores etc...then all of a sudden my friend got a nasty email from the cat foundation and told us to cease and desist using their name, and don't want our money and nothing to do with us. So anyways we gave all the money to the spca and the were very thrilled with our donation. Now everytime I see the Hervey Cat Foundation advertised in the paper asking for deparatley needed money I getted pretty ticked off......

I wish I would have known and done so before I adopted... I was on a business trip when everything happened and I cried half the drive home at the thought of them taking her away!

Honestly, I'll probably never adopt again.

This sounds familiar!! A couple of years ago, I ran across a rescue in West Virginia and had an adoption auction. There was a STB who had several homes but people kept bringing him back for various reasons. I like the horse, plus I knew his Dam and Sire so I was very interested in him. I won the auction at 300 dollars and sent them the money, and told them the day I would pick up for shipping ( I was racing in Mountaineer and while not close, not far either, plus I already "passed" their standards) Well, at first my WIRED money wasn't there, then they said they had it but not in "time" for the deadline, then it took me awhile to get my money back.
Well, not long after I got an email saying their farm was in trouble and they needed donations.... ah instant Kharma gotta love it!!
I only now go through adoption agencies like ReRun and New Vocations which have been endorsed by USTA and Jockey Club. I have used New Vocations to send a couple of horses and they got really good homes and I got pics and an email from their new homes.
I just wished more people knew how wonderful standardbreds are!!

Oh yeah, that horse is definitely being starved. Geez!! What are they people thinking? Why do some people have to be so dishonest?

Beautiful horse BTW. He's lucky to have found you.
