Sensitive skin?

My horse Casey seems to have very sensitive skin. I have tried to brush softer, but he still backs away sometimes when I am brushing him. I use a rubber curry comb, dandy brush and finishing brush (all by Oster). I also don't just run up to him when I go to brush him, I allow him to see what I am going to do and let him sniff the brush and accept it. But then he'll back off as I am brushing. He seems a little annoyed. So I am not sure, and any tips would be great.

My tb is quite sensitive too, the strange thing is if I brush him when he is eating he doesn't move an inch! I have tried using softer dandy brushes but still have the same problem. He is fine in the winter when he has a thicker coat. Sorry cannot offer you any advice.

Are you sure he is just not sensitive to moving away from pressure?

You know what morgangirl? I think you might have something there. Come to think of it, that sounds like it could fit the bill. He is very responsive to pressure when I ask him to do things, and he also doesn't move when he is eating, so I bet that's it. Thanks all of you guys for your imput, I really appreciate it!

Or perhaps he's being a bit disrespectful??

One of my mares will do that, if she's eating she's good, but if she's just tied up, she will move away from the brush all the time - i know its out of disrespect with her.

Just a thought.

Barefoot: How do you deal with your mare when she is disrespectful by moving away when you are brushing her?
