Poor little guy, what a rude first day of life, I am glad he is doing fine now, I don't think I would be breeding that mare again either...Cathy

We raised an orphan foal that was 2 wks old when her mom died. THe best thing that we had was a pen of 4 yearling right next to the foal and they could touch noses. AT 2 months old she was out with them during the day but locked up in her pen at nite. She bonded with the yearling and knows that she is horse. She doing great and you would never know that she was orphan. Growing great.
THe milk replacer is expensive!! WHen she is was getting milk every 4 hrs around the clock a pail wouldn't last week. I think she was getting 3 pints at every feeding. I don't remember for sure.
Have fun, and share the feeding schedule. My one son was a big help, plus my husband.

Oh yea get the foal switched over to a pail as soon as possible. It goes so much quicker if they drink from a pail. It made those 3 a.m. feeding go so much faster spent more time mixing up the milk than the foal to drink it. Some friends of our a orphan a few months after us and they found a milker replacer that could be mixed up and left in the pen with the foal up to 4 hrs.

Cute colt. Glad he's doing OK.

How old was the mare? It's pretty common for maiden mares to have difficulty accepting the "responsibilities of motherhood", especially if they are young mares.

She may have had a sore udder, due to lack of milk and the foal constantly trying to nurse. That is a common cause of a mare kicking at a foal and usually calls for a dose of domperidone.

Of course it is too late for that in this particular situation, but I was adding that for reference for others on the board.

Good luck with your foal!

Thanks for all the positive replies all. The current update is the the lil man continues to gain strength. The Vet was out again today to boost him with another Plasma bag and some more antibiotics, because after his second bloodwork his C-level was only up to 612. Hes chipper, tho, nursing and bucking and romping and sleeping like a healthy Colt should... I misspelled his Sires name, its Mazkarade, and I found out theres already a "Dusq", so well be re-naming him something else. (Not like Dusq was his official name, anyways...) Oh, and the Mare is 8 years old.

Hope this lil guy grows like a weed~! ONE thing I'd suggest after you get his health and nutrition under control, try to find some youngsters for him to hang with and bond with so he knows he is a horse...

I had an Appy mare who was rejected by her mother and bottle raised and did NOT think she was a horse and I ended up wth her because she was dangerous and needed a LOT of work to learn she was NOT the human, not EQUAL nor ABOVE the human either IN the end, she ended up a much better horse then when I started, but if the original owners would have treated her like a horse her entire life, then she would not have had ot go through 'boot camp'
