schooling?

What do you like to do when schooling your horse?? Most days Im the only one riding and sometimes I find I want to change thing up a bit. Any good ideas? My horse is just starting out (6 months under saddle).

Circles, circles, and more circles. LOL. He can walk an trot with no problems but is still unbalanced at the canter. So pretty much I have been doing a lot of lunging at the canter and riding many circles and figure eights at the walk/trot.

Here's a couple of ideas: try putting out ground poles; great way to build topline. Then bring in low cavaletti, but don't over due it at first. It's hard work on the horse's legs! Another thing I like to do is ride with a small clip-on metronome, really helps establish a steady rhythm.

I just went to a Back to Basics themed clinic and had a blast. what the trainer had us do, first, was groundwork. we focused on respect while leading, lateral flexion, and disengaging the hindquarters.
respect while leading: if you horse gets in your space, tap him on the chest as firmly as you need to so you establish space and your horse focuses on you. if you stop, your horse stops and the same should happen when you back up.
lateral flexion: we simply stood at the horses's side and slowly pulled the lead rope to the withers, and instantly release when you feel the horse soften.
disengage hindquarters: look at your horse's hind legs and tap him on the hindquarters to make his legs cross over.

we did the same things undersaddle, with the addition of the one rein stop.
