Sanding bad for hooves?

I have heard that sanding a horse's hooves is bad for them and causes cracking and such. Is this true at all? Thanks.

I've don't show but I've never heard of sanding a hoof. Just trimming, rasping and filing.

I personally do not like sanding the hoof wall in preparation to show. I will use a little bit of wood filler on the rough areas of the hoof wall, and then sand that, but I won't sand off the periople. This covering is vital to maintaining the proper moisture balance in the hoof.

would it work if you sanded the hoof, then put moisturizer on it?

i have never sanded a hoof, i would ask your farrier. i guess it depends on the condition of the hoof. the farrier does it, but he is a farrier and has done it for years. i dunno, ask!

I haven't, but I heard that some people sand the outside and then spray it with WD40. Supposedly it makes them look show ring sharp without the pricetag of more expensive hoof oils. Personally, I will take the hoof oil. (;
I think of sanding wood, not hooves. (lol)

I have always read about sanding hooves, especially before you put polish on. You can use a piece of sand paper just to get the little specks/clumps of dirt and sand off. If you don't, the polish won't look as nice. But you also have to remember that farrier work is just as important in the ring as pretty hooves. If your horse has a bunch of flair, the judge won't like it (especially in conformation classes).

never sand a hoof, the periople is what maintains the moisture content of the hoof and sanding this off will cause the foot to dry out and crack. Eventually your horse's feet could quite literally fall apart.
For the same reason you shouldnt use hoof oil every day - only ever at shows or it disrupts the natural moisture of the hoof because it prevents the hoof absorbing moisture from the surroundings.
