I have heard of helmets that are shaped like cowboy hats. I think thats a wonderful idea
Head gear is something Ive never worn. I was raised in the back county, and the old timers I rode with, thought helmets were only for jockeys and eventers.
Im not against them. Im just not used to wearing them so never have. But if I plan to really get into english again, I will be using one and being abit smarter.. lol

I will say however, I came off a horse in 2001. And if I have been wearing a helmet, my neck would have snapped at the base of the skull. The way I hit the ground, it would have created a space for the pressure to go into, thus breaking my neck, and probably leaving me in a chair.

I cant say this for everyone, so Im only speaking for me. But I have learned how to hit the ground. Considering I dont bounce any longer. I know how to roll in the air and land the right way. Of course, it will still hurt. But after 20 plus years, getting out of bed in the morning hurts.. lol

Good thread

well yes i agree, it is a CHOICE, but so is smoking(which i do by the way, gonna give up though lol) taking drugs, drink driving etc etc, BUT its not exactly a clever choice. People make bad choices throughout their life and hopefully learn from them, but with this choice- it can be one strike and your out- no second chances. Even the MOST experienced riders can have a bad fall off ANY horse

Buddie - I know you mean well, but this is the type of statement that makes us Cowboy types grit our teeth and stop listening. There is something about people born in the land of the free that had ancestors fight for that right that makes us a bit obstinate to someone that want's to mandate our personal choices and personal freedoms.

Sure, I will agree that helmets have saved lives at times. But it also has to be aknowledged that in the vast majority of cases, western youth that are growing up never seeing a helmet do manage to grow up. And a lot of those kids put themselves in far more hazardous situations that riding a horse will ever be, such as working cattle afoot. Ever gone one on one with a ticked off momma cow? You better have quick reflexes and fast legs, LOL

I personally will always wear a helmet, and even though it's everyone's personal choice to wear one or not, I have to say that for me, not wearing a helmet would be taking an unneccesary risk.

I've seen so many people now that were or could have been saved by wearing a helmet. My mom's helmet saved her life when she fell off and was kicked in the head, the helmet took the worst of the damage and she only had a minor concussion, if she'd not worn the helmet, the blow would have killed her. A boarder at my barn fell off while jumping and got a concussion that would have been alot worse if not for the helmet. Another boarder was injured when they were trying to mount their horse and for whatever reason the horse was spooked and freaked out and the rider was thrown. If not for their helmet they would have had a concussion. There have been many other incidents like this that I've seen, and every time, the helmet made a big difference. I posted in another thread about an upper level dressage rider who was not wearing a helmet. When the horse reared and flipped over on her, she was badly hurt. Now she's in a coma that she's unlikely to recover from, and doctors said that if she'd worn a helmet, the injury probably would have been a bad cucussion but she would not have been in a coma or damaged the way she is.

I'm not saying that everyone has to wear a helmet, because it really is a personal choice, but it isn't a bad idea.

Similar helmet threads:

Helmets!!! or lack there of??? This one asks the same question as yours.

western & forced to wear a helmet

Do you wear a helmet when riding?

Helmets?like or dont like

Helmets One that I started over a year ago. I should have done a search for other helmet threads before I made it.

Helmets?

And those are just a few.

I'm personally done with helmet threads. Very interesting the first time you read one, but each thread always has the same oppinions and views tossed around and fought over. There are only so many sides to the helmet issue. People don't enter these sorts of threads with an open mind, but with fire in their hearts over their thoughts and ideas. I doubt that anyone has started wearing a helmet because of these threads.

I don't think the helmet thing compares to the cig, drug, or dinking thing...I was born without a helmet. But I also was not born with a chimney on my head, or the need to shove stuff in my body to cause me to kill someone else. No helmet, I kill me, unless my mellon whacks someone else of their horse in the process, but then again...with a helmet, I might whack a couple peoples off their horses! ha! Not wanting to argue about it, but is just a view!

Buddie, I agree with you--I can't imagine not wearing a helmet. But just to clarify--the "no-helmet problem" is everywhere. In Germany at least, I see SO many riders do flatwork without helmets (and no, I do not think a huntcap is an appropriate substitute). I am an eventer, and at our shows we are not even allowed to sit on a horse without a properly buckled helmet without getting eliminated. The only time I take it off is when I swim my horse--which I haven't done in years. My life has also been saved by a helmet. So I am a big advocate.

I hate my computer--it likes to post without my permission . . . I think you are right to keep the issue in our collective consiousness; unfortunately, most people won't listen. Funny, we take advice on so many topics on this board, but apparently this issue is not one of those areas. Well, I heard you and agree with you 100%.
