safe way to introduce hobbles

my horse has never worn hobbles but id like to use them so he can trim the edges so to speak how would i safely introduce them so i dont have some crazy wild rodeo show or something? is there a "way" to do it or do you just slap em on and watch the show?lol?

I have the Clint Anderson video on hobbles, and tried them on my almost 2 year old colt twice last week. He did wonderful with them...but he is also pretty level headed, doesn't over-react & really trusts me.

You need a small closed in area such as a round pen with very soft footing, just in case the horse reacts badly or falls. Once you put them on then you need to both keep an eye on their reaction, and also stay out of the way. My colt kept backing up thinking they would fall off, but when he realized they weren't going anywhere, then I encouraged him to walk toward me saying "easy" with each step. After an almost trip'n'fall & some overstepping, he did fantastic.
