Lots to think about there for sure. I'm glad others are using them without any difficulty and doing very intense work with their horses. I'm going to go take a closer look at all the sites you've posted and see what they have. Maybe a demo would be just what I need because I'm very curious

Well if the only problem they have is with mounting I tihnk I could put up with that Usually I have someone to hold my right sturrip when I get on anyways just to save the saddle, the horse and me from any extra stress.

Oh and another question about treeless while we're on the subject. What about for horses that have issues with bridging? I have another mare that isn't ridden often but does have this problem. Would it again just be a question of different pads and shims for her too?

Truly I'd reccomend Wintec They really are GREAT saddles, especially for what you pay for them. They come in really wide trees, and I don't know about western but in English you can change the tree size with the gullet system they sell.

Good luck with her training!

There is a huge dealer of them fairly close to us that I can go check them all out. They are usually under $500 or so aren't they?

I can't stand their western model, I sat in one for a couple minutes at the store. But I loved the 2000 model and the VSD

My Anglo gelding has the problem. The folks at Skito made me a custom shim for him to fill in for his "dippy" area for only $20! It works like a charm, and lets me use the same saddle and pad for both horses. I just stick the shims in the pad when I ride him. A good dealer should have a Skito pad with various shims for you to try. If not, Skito will do demo pads that you can try at the same time you have the demo saddle. Just let them know what type of saddle you'll be getting in and when.

The VSD is in the $450 range, but the 2000 is in the $625 range. You might have to go with the Wintec Wide if you decide on Wintec. The gullet is changable, but the rest of the tree on the standard wintecs is a "regular" tree, which doesn't work well for flat backed horses. If you're local shop has a trial policy though, it's worth a shot.

As wide as your girl looks, I would think you would need the Wintec Wide, too, if you went with them.

If you liked the VSD, you should like it since it's also a VSD model.

I'm looking for a used Thorowgoods broadback right now for a table top pony. I tried a Wintec 2000 (regular w/ widest gullet in) and it just didn't work. Perhaps the wide back version would be better, but lots of people said the panels of the Thorowgood Broadback is better suited to the flat topped equine.

OK good to know If there is even a possibility of fitting her too that would be great. She already has a saddle that fits her nicely but it will need to be restuffed soon and it is such an old saddle I'm not sure if it is worth it if I can get a new saddle that fits afew of my girls

Alright I think I'm going to take a look at the wintec wide as well. It is english but I'm not 100% sure what I even want to do with her right now, I just want her to be comfortable.

And the dealer I was talking about has literally hundreds in stock so I can sit in whatever I like, they are pretty much gauranteed to have it in stock. They also offered to loan me some gullets to see if they fit the horses so I may do that.
