I would HIGHLY suggest a Skito Interpad. They are a half pad with very cushion-y dense memory foam inside. The foam does not bottom out under weight and it absorbs up to 90% of the impact to a horse's back. It also circulates air very well (gel, neoprene, and other closed cell foams can trap or even create heat). I LOVE my Skito pad!

If you'd prefer a sheepskin pad, then I'd go with ThinLine's Saddle Fitter pad. It's very nice quality and works just like Mattes' correction pad. The ThinLine inserts are quite shock absorbing. My daughter's trainer uses one so she can use the same saddle on many horses. It seems to work very well!

With either option, there's not a ton of bulk between you and the horse, so you still have that close contact feel.

The beauty of the Mattes shims is that you can add more or fewer depending on the amount of atrophy. There's nothing more frustrating than having to either go with no shim, or a 1/2" shim, as with some of these types of pads. It can be a WORLD of difference to add 1-2 more layers of shim material on one side or the other for a horse with more atrophy one just one side. Right now I need a leeetle more shim on Rio's right side, so to do that, I use one shim on the left that is a little less dense than the shim on the right.

The Roma pad is indeed a nice, inexpensive pad

But, it does not offer the shimming you were looking for.
