I ride dressage and ride in a dressage saddle. Lately I want to go out on the trail more. I need something with more "substance", ie. horn, bigger, deeper seat. A western saddle that will keep me in better. (My horse is spooky and can sometimes take off). Do you have any suggestions for a western saddle that would be as similar to a dressage saddle as possible--re: leg position, weight, feel for the horse in regards to my aids-seat and leg?

Maybe you could try an Australian saddle with a horn. I've never used one but I've read about them and seen pictures and they look like they might work for that.

I dont think there is any western saddle that is going to simulate a dressage saddle, it's just not going to happen. If you feel more secure in a western saddle on trails, just ride in one on trails, then when you do ring work, use your dressage saddle. Riding on the trails in a western saddle is not going to jeaprodise your "position" if thats what you asking, your base of support is going to be the same on either saddle.

I think an Aussie saddle would be better than a western, but any way it goes it will be different from a dressage saddle.

Thanx for the advice. Is there any particular western saddle that is more light weight than others?

Anything synthetic.. I have an abetta that is really light weigh, althought I do also have a small leather western saddle that weighs about the same.

I've never ridden a dressage saddle but have ridden a lot of western. I'm guessing that a western saddle isn't going to give you the contact you want with your horse. I currently ride an Aussie saddle and love it. I actually feel more secure in it than I do a western saddle, and an Aussie saddle gives better contact with the horse than a western one does.

Hmmm. I've thought about Aussie saddles. I even bought one for my daughter when she first started riding for the same reason I want one. Do you have a recommendation? The one I bought I don't really like. The leather is terrible hard and stiff.
