Post rug rubs

i have a turnout rug on my horse and it seems to fit her ok. the only thing is she has got two bald patches on her chest. i can fit the width of a hand and a half between the front of the rug and her so it is not too tight. the patches do not seem to be getting any bigger and she did itch the other day when she got a few lice. the hair does not seem to be growing back! what should i do?

What do you mean by a few lice?

Are you sure she's not infested and itching herself?

Lice can also get into the blanket so you have to treat the blanket as well as the horse.

BALM!!!!! rub a thin layer of Balm on the bare spots. it will keep the spots moist and warmer so hair will be able to grow back faster. and also get a horse "bra" they work wonders. Fiona has barespots too and i was told to use Balm and it worked for several other horses.

best thing is to sew something soft like sheepskin round the areas that rub, that way they wont rub as much.

You could get her a pair of long underwear to keep it from rubbing. Try Schneider's Saddelry they have a nice body snuggy that should do the trick. They also come in shoulder snuggy only. Those are a bit cheaper.

Happiness,

It realy is the wrong time of year in UK for lice, I doubt that they are Might be worth de-licing just incase though, we've had funny weather.

Your rug, I make rugs for a living. Lou's suggestion for sheepskin is great, or what I use when I make a rug, is always nylon in the chest and shoulder area, even if the rest of the rug is wool(on inside of T/O), it's really cheap, or you could cut up a old nylon peice of clothing(something from a charity shop if you havn't got anything - like an old underskirt ) Make sure your rug is fitting high enough up the shoulders, rugs that are hanging low and slipping back tend to rub more. You may need to put a tuck in each side of the neck, to bring it higher up.

The only rugs in UK that seem to have catered for this problem is Horseware(Rambo) apart from my rugs

Or if you are lazy like me you could purchase a shoulder guard which protects the shoulder from blanket rubs.

www.robinhoods.com check them out!!

Hi Carrie,

Yeh thems good. I make em too You know what they charge for them is robbery - they take a tiny bit of material, admit it's lycra, so hard to sew (need 5 spole thread), but there is no need to charge what they do, if you put your mind to it, and used a long stich on a normal sewing machine, with a fine needle, and a bit of velcro, you could make one yourself
