Debbie, IMPO, using round bales IS pratical. personally, as long as there is room for the horse to get in the shed, having the round bale in there is beneficial. the horse always has hay to eat, it keeps the hay out of the weather, and the outer layer of the round bales which isn't good ends up being a great soft and dry place for the horse to lay.

Beanie33 said they stuffed the round bale in shed and her horse can barely get in and out of shed.
But I agree with you about the weather and protecting it. Not disagreeing ,just going by what Beanie33 was concerned about.

Wanna hear something funny........My horse has hardly touched the roundbale! I didn't tell him not to eat it I swear!!! As I have heard everyone say they will choose grass over hay.
He is in a paddock with some grass. Only problem is he is loosing a little weight. That could be just the winter fat coming off. So cutting corners will not payoff in this situtuation. They could have dropped off to one flake of hay twice daily. It all comes down to laziness and not listening to owners. We know our horses, well most of us. Any hows he will be moving to a different location where the grass is plentifull. Which for him is good he need the extra fat. He will not have to work so hard for the grass he gets.
