I LOVE rope halters. I don't use other halters except a leather one to ship in.
My horses like them much better to.

I will only tie now with a rope halter with the built in lead...I'm done with those buckles on lead ropes going flying when a horse pulls back!

Just as a point, thick "good quality" leather doesn't break. It's the cruddy, single thickness crowns that give way in an emergency... putting a nice, triple thickness, heavy excellent leather halter on your horse (like most expensive shipping halters) isn't much better than putting them in nylon/rope anyway.

If your talking to me (which I assume your are please correct me if I'm wrong) I use a plain leather stable halter so I can attach a head bumper and it is also breakable. Plus it makes a good backup halter for shows.

No actually- I wasn't addressing anyone in particular. My TB darn near strangled herself in the trailer with a Quillins or Walsh halter on... just thought it was worth mentioning that that don't break unless they're thin(ner) leather.

I will have to see if I can find the photos of the ones that my friends hanovarian(sp) mare destroyed. Maybe the leather did not break but the steel parts sure went flying and I know hers was high dollar.

I'm sure... I had a gorgeous Crosby leather halter that the same TB (hmmm... she was a nasty thing...) with brass hardware that she demolished when she decided being dirty was better than getting a bath. The leather didn't break, but the snap broke and both side rings where the cross ties were stretched. I'd still love to see pictures of your friend's halter.

Yep, I have tons of them. I loveee them. They are much much better than the normal buckle up halters.

That's funny- I bought my nice leather halter because it WOULD break in an emergency!!

I don't like the rope halters- my guy has great ground manners 99% of the time and really doesn't need any extra pressure, and if it isn't necessary why have it IMO.

I use a nylon w/leather breakaway strap since I broke my leather one (backed him out of the trailer while still tied... BAD me!)

That's why I want things that break- my horse doesn't ever pull back but sometimes I do stupid things (like above) and need something that will break fast to keep him from getting hurt.

I probably would try one if I had a horse that was difficult on the ground... if we run into a really bad situation I just loop the lead rope around his nose like a chain and that does the trick.
