Knots on the nose are strategically placed. Great training aid. Not harsh.

I always been told not to tie with them?

I used to use mine a lot, but I never mastered putting them on, it took me forever.

I wanted one for my yearling, bought one, and the knots sits really weird on her face, so I never use it.

I don't tie with it but Ive seen people do it and the horse was okay. I just use it to teach the not yet started and greenies flexing for better control under saddle.

I love mine It fits Misty well (I made it lol). I added extra rings so I can cross tie with it (with twine of course) and the ones closer to the ears help keep the extra from flinging her in the eye

I use it 90% of the time

Misty modeling it

Stormy too

I absolutely love the one that we have. I used it to teach my mare to flex.

Meteor I only use a rope halter as he's smart enough to know the difference and will try to bust a nylon halter if he's tied with it. He broke one last year and ever since, if he's tied in one, within a minute he will set back and try to break it. He won't try it in a rope halter, though.

Mars, I flip flop between the two.

This thread is old, but seems to have some productive new posts so I'll add.

I hate how rope halters look but love the functionality.

I do tie in them, but only supervised. Yearling Deb was/is still occasionally pulling back when she throws a tantrum. I like the rope halters because there is a consequence to pulling back(!) and she won't just sit on the end of her halter, pulling. Actually she's all but over the pulling back but a flat halter is not a privilege she has earned, yet. Man, I want my young horses to learn never to question or dream of questioning the authority of being tied.

I always used leather- I rode at traditional H/J focused english barns that would have been aghast at the use of rope halters, and I've never been wild about the way they look myself. On the other hand, I would be willing to use anything that sends clear signals to my horse (such as a rope halter) as a training tool.

Do you want to sell it? Yearling ones are hard to find. And it would probably fit someone around here.

I voted undecided.
Cuz it was the closest thing to "Depends on the Horse" or "Not all the time"
I Use a rope halter when a bathe my mare outside, because she's usually skidish on the hose and I prefer her pulling on a rope halter than on a leather halter. When I don't want pressure cuz she's being good the rope halter is pressure-less.. but when I need it.. it's there.

I don't use it on crossties, generally I just don't like putting crossties where there isn't a solid loop. At shows I don't tend to bring it along either because I can't really use the chain of the leas chain and for her safety if she acts up in the unknown I prefer control.

So I have both rope and leather (and a nylon but I never use it unless bathing in the wash stall). I use 'em when I feel it works.
