R'nB & the Burr Battle

Hey Guys

My new guy, Fez, LOVES the burrs....to the point that he's come in with the entire plant attached to his BUM! Sadly for me, his mom, I don't like burrs & his pastern is 15-20acres large with mixture of trees, forest, hills river, etc. So ya pasture is a horses' dream, and MY nightmare! hahahaha

So since Fez likes to come in 100% COVERED in burrs, and since he's 1/2 Andalusian and was so lucky to be given the Andy mane, I'm serisouly having "The burr battle!"

Here's is MY solvent.....so far 2 days & no burs......lets hope it keeps up!

Close up of one of them:

And a cute Fez Head Shot just cause

If anyone is up for knowing how I did this, let me know!

i saw these pics in the "recently posted pics" and had to search out what the story was on this cute 'do! My equines all have pretty short manes (2 appys and a donkey) so i don't have this problem!

Aaw Fez!

I am SO glad we moved the herd over to our mostly burrless pasture a little early this year... I spent two hours deburring today (including forty-five minutes sitting on top of a chute panel with their heads in my lap, doing forelocks)... we're juuust about set for a burr-free winter! *boogies* I have a couple more horses to do, though.

I did this with the Heff's forelock a while back and ultimately the burrs crowded it down so that she had a little flash of "safe" forelock and then a MOUND of burrs on the top. But yours looks better done!

Yup it sure looks dumb! So dumb in fact that afterwards I took the big DWB, Torreau, out int crossties to tack him up, and well Fex was in his stall kiddy-corner to the ties, and Fez shook and Torreau spooked at him! hahahaha Ah well, Torreau will get use to it, as he's stalled right across from The Fez

Well as you can see down by the whither I started just to wrap the braids, but soon thought "ya the burrs area always at the top of the mane....so that won't really solve my problems". Oh and FYI I found one of the ones I did by the whither in his stall the next day....but all the others are still intack & living!

So here's the list of How to do it:
1) choose your braid section.
2) cut 3 pieces of about 2.5" long Vet wrap...I just layed them on Fez's back when I started, then as I went up his neck I was sticking them to the "already done" braids.
3) divide into 3 sections (for the braid)
4) lift 1 section straight UP above the neck and twist so the hairs are all together. Hold this tight with 1 hand
5) Reach over & grab 1 of the pieces of vet wrap, stretch it around the braid and have the loose end stick to the 1st quarter of the long end. Then hold that tight and wrap the rest around the top of the braid.
6) squeeze it tight & if there's a loose section just pull it over & squeeze it into the vet wrap so it all sticks together
7) repeat for the other 2 sections of the braid......yes it'll take some time to get the strategy down. Now the mane should acutally stick straight up & then fall down, yes it'll look ridiculous!
8) braid like you normally would to the end of the mane.
9) put an elastic in like you normally would.
10) Cut another piece of vet wrap that is about 5" long...have it in a handy spot.
11) loop the braid up so the area left below the vet wrat at the top is no more than 3.5" long.
12) grab that piece of vetwrap & wrap it around the folded up braid. Be sure to pull it tight so it stays & then squeeze it right around the braid in the end. Be sure to cover the bottom of your braid too -- for that I just leave about .25" at the bottom then pull it up & over & together. Oh and you want this piece of vet wrap to TOUCH the vet wrap at the top of the mane to keep everything clean & stuck together.

VOILA it's done! If your horse is known for getting stuff out, just add a bit of hocket tap around the middle to help everything stick together.

Of course you should prepare your mane before you start, by combing it out, and even putting in something to keep it clean & healthy.....which ever product you choose.

Jenje, how I totally WISH! The BO has taken off to Europe & the kids & I are looking after the horses. Because of that, it's much less of a PITA for the kids to just let everyone out together. That means they don't have to walk 2 horses all the way up the driveway! Otherwise, Fez is usually out with one other mare in the burr free paddock.....but at the same time, there's less grass out there, so neiter is 100% ideal in their own ways.

Oh but everyone's tails are all tied up & doing well! It's something that has been a HUGE life saver this fall. Seems the burrs are at an all time high.....either that or I'm just totally annoyed cause my horses' mane is jsut soo long & thick & well I want it to stay that way! hahahahha

Well I was out there today -- it has been 2days since I put everything together. I did have to re-do about 2 of them, so really that's not that bad. Usually Fez comes in with a "growth of burrs" from his neck & forehead. Today I took maybe 10 burrs total outta his mane & forelock!

So it works. I acutally wraped over the vet wrap in hockey tape.....I'm thinking that will help them stay in (he lost 2 of the covers)

I'll everyone updated though
