Ahh, perfect timing. I'm going over to the barn soon do de-burr two horses. I hate burrs so much! I'm going to do what you did with the mane for my two. And I'm also going to do forelocks and tails
**Another tip: SHOW SHEEN! Spray it wherever you have the burrs at (mane, tail, forelock), give it a minute to set, and the burrs come out so much easier!

Oh the battle, last night I spent about 45mins to an hour or so taking all the Fez's mane out of his braids, and then putting Mane & Tail Leave in Conditioner onto his mane (it's all I have for conditioner at this time)from about 3" from the top all the way down. I then re-braided everything into normal pasture braids and then I just put the vet wrap around the braids.

The little loops at the top of my braids jsut ended up sliding down & I think exposing more hair above the braid then usual. So I'm tried just really using quite the amount of cowboy Magic at the top, to help allow the burrs to slide out without having to take all the braids out....

So the battle is going well, Out of 5 horses total in the barn, Fez is loosing the least amount of mane when de-burring! So I'm poud to say it's working well!

I hate those burrs!!! Jake, however, loves them!!! So much actually that he comes in from the pasture with them in his forelock, mane and tail every day! Not just one or two, usually the whole bush is wrapped into every strand of hair!!! He also has managed to hurt his eye in the process. My horse dentist said they like to eat the green burrs and is most likely getting right in the bush and scratched his eye. I have been using neomyicin with some other antibiotics in it and it's not swollen or watery anymore, but those burrs are evil!!! Do have to admit though, I went to get him from the pasture and I too was bringing back some burrs on my jeans. Darn~!!

I'd love to do that CYH, but the field is 15-20acres big! de-burring that amount of space would take me a life time! The BO does keep the front parts where the horses hang out most of the time free of them, but this time of year they have eaten all the grass up close to the barn and are now in the *back 40* woods for some. I can't blame them!

Plus, with my luck I would set myself on fire

His mane gets pulled a bit, but it's totally NOTHING in compairison to what happens if I don't do it. This horse has mane that covers his entire neck, so there's lots to get caught on the burrs!

Just another quick update. I slightly modified my design & it is working TOTALLY AMAZINGLY! I re-did his entire mane on Saturday night & he as come in with a total of 6 burrs since & NOTHING has fallen out at all! It even survived a seriously muddy roll where the rest of my horse was caked in mud from nose to tail! & there are very minimal "fuzzies" at the top of his mane!

I'm totally thrilled!! R'nB HAS WON THE BURR BATTLE! Ha, take that Burrs!

So what's the final design that works best?

I'm doing my mare Holly tomorrow. I did Mercy's last week. I just braided her mane, and wrapped them with the vet wrap, then taped them. Then I wrapped and taped three together again. Kinda like your original design. It seems to hold up with her but Holly rubs her mane more.

CMW: I dunno if I can describe it well without pics....but I'll do my best!

NO vet wrap at the top of the mane before I start braiding.
Braid the mane as usual.
Loop the braid up but NOT to the very top of the mane & use an elastic to hold it up.
Vet wrap from the very top of the mane (not where the looped braid it) down to the very bottom.
Add tape (I used bandaging tape from my 1st aid kit, but hockey tape would really well!) at the very top of the vet wrap, but be sure it doesn't stick to or touch any mane.

I was having issues with the vet wrap sliding off the braids, bu with this design there is a littel area where the tape goes that is smaller than what is below that, and that doesn't allow the vet wrap to slide down or pull off! So far it's working REALLY well, cause all the vet wrap was COVERED in mud the other day, which leads me to believe Fez was really rubbing those braids in the mud!

I also put cowboy magic at the very very top of the mane to prevent the burrs from sticking up there, which means less "frizzying" & breakage when you're taking them out without undoing the entire vet wrap & braid ordeal.

I'll get a photo the next time I'm out there.....hopefully tonight if I'm able to breath without issues through the day Thinkin' either badly badly bruised rib, or a cracked rib.....NOT from Fez though
