| Senior Member+ | RIP Yauvani *Letter from Gwen of GF & dream #64
I'm devastated to annouce that little Vaughn did not make it. When I arrived at Alamo Pintado today, he was deteriorating further since yesterday. To achieve any sort of reaction from him, it took playing in his ears, mouth, and nostrils along with loud talking. After that, I would only get a bit of eye contact and a small amount of front leg movement. At that point, I was just heartbroken since I realized what the realistic outcome of all this would be. I began talking to the vet extensively about our situation and possible options. In her experience, she has seen foals take a downturn, however, they recover within a matter of hours and they were never as unresponsive of Vaughn was. The first option would be to put him on a ventilator to help with the O2-CO2 exchange, which he was having difficulty with. The ventilator would have cost $800 a day on top of the "normal" costs and he may have to be placed on it for an indeterminable amount of time. With this, she gave him a 1% chance of survival and, if he did survive, he would most likely have brain damage preventing him from acting like a normal horse let alone be an upper level eventing prospect. The second option would be to continue to watch him and just hope that he would miraculously turn around. The chances of that happening were even slimmer than with the ventilator. The last option would be to put him down. I called my dad, the funder, and told him the situation. He said that, if I believed he could make it, he would support me and my decision and we would somehow make ends meet. Based on numerous factors, I decided that the best option would be to put him down. If his chances of survival were more into the double digits, I may have made a different decision, but that was not the case. By this time, his temperature was starting to fall again down to 99.1*F. I told the vet my decision. Vaughn left peacefully. It hurt so much to watch Penny's reaction. Before, she would nicker and encourage him whenever he made a promising movement. When we put him with her in the larger portion of the stall, she stood with her nose touching him just nickering softly. She then tried licking him profusely trying to revive him until he was wet again. When that wasn't working, she started nosing him with more conviction and then nosing turned to gentle paws. As soon as she realized he wasn't there, she just stood near him with her head sunk low with a small munch of hay here and there. She also became much less protective of him, allowing the mare in the next stall to her to be closer to him, but would still pin her ear's at the other mare if she was too close for her comfort. Rest in peace, my sweet boy. As your name suggests, I'm sure you are dancing over the Rainbow Bridge full of youth and exurberance as I type this. ![]()

| Senior Member+ | Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart. Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together.... Rest In Peace little Yauvani, may you gallop in green pastures forever.

Oh no Suzie. I am so sorry, but I think you made the best decision for him. This had to be so hard and if you ever need to talk I am positive that you know everyone on this forum is here for you. I wish there was more that could have been done. RIP Yauvani.
