Life is dangerous....realistically you need a full suit of armor just to get out of bed in the morning.

I think it's great that you make your young daughter wear one and I think it's great if an adult chooses to wear one. That's their choice. And I would never give them a hard time about wearing one. But my choice is to let the wind blow through my hair.

As someone who would probably be dead without a helmet, and the parent of a small girl (on a big horse), there's no question that helmets are used 100% of the time.

While I think it's exceedingly foolish to ride without one, if an adult chooses not to, I think it's their problem. I'd like to see it mandatory for kids under 18 though.

I'm in NH. Here motorcycle laws also don't force riders to wear helmets. I know someone who works in a neuro ICU as a transplant coordinator. They call them "donor-cycles" there. But interestingly enough, kids under 16 must wear bike helmets, or their parents get fined. I wouldn't mind if the same laws were applied to horses.

To me, riding without a helmet is the equivalent of driving without a seatbelt. I would never do it... I have though. I have sat on a horse I trusted and walked around bareback, but nothing more.
The risk is greater than the pros.

Wonder what the percentage of helmet riders is English compared to Western?

Unless I'm forced to, I normally don't wear one. I've been riding my horse for almost two years now, and around home, it's extremely unlikely she's going to do anything. I've ridden down the road and on the trails without one, but if we ever went anywhere (like a show or fair) I'd for sure wear one. In a new environment, you're never quite sure what can happen. I have to wear one when I take lessons as well. On any other horse besides my own, I would put on a helmet (at least until I spent a year or two with them and really know what they are capable of), but I don't, and I think it's my own business. This is a topic that will be argued over until the end of time.

Probably a lot higher ratio of helmet wearers in the English discipline than Western.

I'll wear one depending on the horse and the situation. I don't usually wear one with my mare but I will with my other two as they are in training. It also depends on what I'm doing, if I go outside of the arena, yes, I wear a helmet. If I jump, I wear a helmet, new area= helmet.

It just depends on the situation and horse. But I will say that when I was a minor, I wore a helmet no matter what.

I have always ridden with a helmet.

Had a good friend I used to ride with when I was about 12, she was much older than me (40's, maybe a little older, I don't remember). Her horse was a good dependable one, but one day when we were out riding her horse tripped while we were cantering, and rolled over her twice. My good friend was unconscious on the ground (later went to the hospital and was there 2 weeks for a concussion), and my 10 year old sister and I were left there with her to handle the situation ourselves. Scary, scary situation. Ever since then she has worn a helmet...anyone who doesn't needs to seriously reconsider wearing one. Your horse may be 'safe', but he/she can still trip and fall, run you under a tree, another horse could kick you while riding...the list goes on.

The only time I wore a helmet was for 4H, now I don't ever use a helmet. I'm also old enough to make that decision for myself.
