Riding Together

Hey guys, I was just wondering what everyone's thoughts were on riding the same horse with a friend. Either bareback or with a saddle for a limited amount of time. Walk/trot. Sometimes my friend hops on the back with me bareback and we just walk and maybe trot a bit and some people at our barn get really upset by this. Just wondering, thanks!!

It depends on how big the horse is and how much you guys weigh.

I've done it before, and it can be a lot of fun!

As long as you have a sane horse who doesn't mind, and you don't do it for too long, I don't think it's that big of a problem.

I do think it could be hard on the horse's back if you were doing a lot of it, trying to do hard riding while doing it (such as hills / rough trails), or if both the people were pretty heavy.

Well he is a 4 year old 15.2 hands about 1000 lbs. I weigh about 155 and my friend weighs about 110 and that's bareback. We mostly just do walking..

I would worry a little with him being so young just because he will not have the balance of an older horse- but if you are just doing w/t you should be fine and good for you if your horse is well mannered enough at 4!

I used to do it a lot when I was a kid but I weighed less than 100 lbs then (those were the days) and it was for short jaunts. I guess my only concern would be that your horse is still young with developing bones so i wouldn't make a common practice of it.
