When my mare was pregnant, I rode her just normal, nothing too hard though, until she was really showing. Then, I only rode her bareback, in the evenings when it was cool, at a walk. When she got even bigger, I walked with her and lead her a little way down the road every evening. Then, the last couple of weeks, I just let her be. I brushed her every day and spent time with her. When she was ready to deliver, she nickered to me as I was coming down the road to where she was, when I got close, she began pawing the ground, telling me to hurry up it was TIME. I got there, we went into the barn and she laid down and delivered, just for me!! ...sorry, I know I went farther then you asked, I just love to tell that story!!

I wait at least 1 month after breeding to ride. I have easily excitable mares, and do not want to take any chances- especially now that I am in the higher dollar stud fees. The last foal my mare had she was ridden the night before she foaled bareback with a halter in the paddock. I took her on many trail rides durring her pregnancy, w/t/c up until a couple months before foaling. After that it was w/t and then down to walk bareback. We did not know her exact due date, as she was sold to us open. Needless to say she had a VERY easy foaling- the quickest of any of my past foalings, and she was a maiden. |

This mare in this picture was about 5 month in foal at the time the picture was taken. She was bred between shows. She came home from one show she was in season was bred and about 2 weeks latter was back showing and was never not being ridden. There are a lot of show people who will breed their mares and then show them. If they are in shape and working at the time they are bred they are fine. I would not breed one then weight and then start working and showing them like that.

We rode Mia up until the last 3 months of her pregnancy, but that is because the faol was bough in utero and the people that bought it for some reason requested that we not ride during the last three months. So we didnt, but I have always thought it was ok to ride up until the end.

I ride until the saddle no longer fits. I find that when they are in good shape they foal out easier. I have ridden lightly up until about 3 days before.

Taylor was rode and shown through her pregnancy. Our TB mare was rode until, as Reiner said, the saddle/girth didn't fit. Then it was just bareback riding.
