Riding Broodmares

I'm finally going to bred my mare. She is in performance shape and the thought of not being to ride her is driving me crazy. How long after she is bred to I need to stay off of her? I will be happy to ride bareback or whatever I need to do for her. After reading the last messages I understand that I shouldn't be riding her in her last month...and I'm sure she will have me off of her back when she first starts showing...she's a little spoiled that way. I just want to make sure she doesn't slip the foal since this is her first foal.

i wouldnt ride for the first month either, just to make sure she doesnt absorb/abort it.

I rode my mare when she got back from being bred.. I even still showed her.. I just stopped riding her when she entered her 10th month

i rode Fiona the day after each insemination....but look where THAT got me!! LOL

Give her a few weeks after she comes back... just to settle and relax. If your mare is used to being ridden all the time it's actually best not to change the schedule. It'll keep her in shape and healthy. I stopped riding my mare around 9 1/2 months undersaddle and just sorta putzed around after that until 10 months or so. I was told by the vet (I don't know if this is true) that because I kept her in working condition, there would be less back problems in the long run.

Thanks for all the help. She is at the breeding farm now...she should be in, in the next few days and I'm really excited.

It took me 2 years to get my mare bred. She was in excellent condition when she was being bred I had been riding her every day for the past few years. When I found out that they were having a hard time getting her preg I had to change studs because AI was costing me way to much money and of corse she was at the best vet possible

Once I switched studs I saw a difference in my girl they new place was actually letting her com in season and want the stud the other place I found out was giving her the shot and just waiting for a folical any way back on topic the new place got her bred almost emediatly and I didnt step foot on her the whole pregnancy nor did I ride my other mare because I didnt want my preg momma to stress and loose the baby. Wheew that was alot of typing. I think it depends on the mare. I couldnt afford for her to loose that baby, and I feel if I had rode her she deffinatly would have. However my other mare I rode up tell the 9th month and no problems but the breeding was free and it was her 4th baby not her first.

PS sory for the ear full just telling you what I did
