Post Rice Bran Oil

I have a yearling filly who I am desperately trying to put weight on. I am feeding her Strategy & sweet feed with black oil sunflower seeds. She also gets all the grass hay she can stand & is turned out on pasture all day. She started gaining, but has stopped I have heard & read that rice bran oil is a great way to out weight on a horse. Is this accurate? Can I get it from a palce that specializes in horse feeds?

Corn or soy oil is a tarditional favorite, check to see if is 100% fat. That is what you want to feed a hard keeper. Beet pulp is another great way for putting and keeping weight on horses. Are you on a good deworming program? Horses under 2 years old dont develope an immumity to Ascarid or called round worms and they can cause big problems in younger horses. For these parasites you should use:Panacur/safe-guard/zimectrin/zimectrin gold/quest/quest plus/combo care/strongid/eqimax
Most vets recommend deworming every two months.
You might want to have his teeth check to, younger horses can develop teeth problems and that will interfer with his weight.

I worm religiously with Zimectrin & her teeth are fine. She was so undernourished when I bought her though, so maybe I just need to be patient. She's going to be tall, so maybe she's growing up instead of growing out right now. I plan on getting some Rice Bran Oil this weekend & trying it. If that doesn't work, will try something else.

If you are shoving too much stuff in a yearling filly, you can cause other problems....

Sometimes slow is better than nothing. It took me forever to put weight on my colt when I got him. Thought he never would fill in his ribs. (was stabled with another colt when I got him...guess who lost the feed war)

Up the hay intake and you can usually never go wrong. Free choice the hay and you should see a difference within a few weeks.
