Post rewards

You always read about giving your horse a reward when she does something you want when training her.
What kind of reward?
Ive heard that giving horses carrots or sugar cubes will make them expect them every time they see you.
I would love to reward her but want to reward her correctly.
Can you help me?

It depends on what you're doing. If you're asking with a rein cue, the reward is a release of pressure. Actually, with most cues, the reward is a release of some type of pressure. Asking for the trot, the horse trots, you release leg pressure. Leading, you release lead rope pressure when the horse moves.

if you gihem treats as a reward they may start to nip , which is very very bad
just better to reward them by a nice scratch on there tickley spot or something
food treats are ok very occasionally but no more than occasional

A reward could be as simple as taking the pressure off the horse in the round pen. For example, if you are driving the horse forward and making him work and then let him stop for a job well done you have rewarded him. Another example would be bumping your legs to move forward and the reward would be to stop bumping when the horse moves.

If you ask your horse to canter, and he does, you quit asking. That is a reward. You have released the pressure for the correct response. Any time you release the cue for the correct response, you have given a reward.

Looks like I should have refreshed my pc as Dawn and I have basically said the same thing.

In my experience, most horses are happy to just receive some nice verbal praise and a friendly pat/rub as a reward. Giving them treats as constant rewards will more than likely make them piggy. I'd go easy on the treats when it comes to training. I've always believed treats should be given in their feed anyway.
