Go for it. I love my ex-racehorse. I adopted her through LOPE of texas. Other states call it CANTER. I have had her for a year and we have had our ups and downs, but she is great. She has good/bad days just like me. Like I said before--Go for it.

How about an OTT standardbred? They are great and are much more forgiving than thorougbreds. I have had 2 now and love them so much.

how much riding experience do you have? do you have any experience with training? I used to ride off the track race horses and it takes a LONG time before you ahve a horse thats really going nicely....not just a few weeks...but a year or more....are you willing to wait that long?

Standardbreds don't tend to overreact or be dramatic about things so if you do something sudden or if they are scared they have a tendancy to freeze and refuse to move rather than run away.
Standardberd race tracks are very bussy places and the horse become very accustomed to traffic and noisees so they really are not very spookey horses. They are taught to trot behinde a moving starting gate attached to a vehicle so they don't mind traffc comming close to them.
Often they are family owned and are accustomed to children running around. My mare loves children that is how she got her barn name Baby. My old gelding loved children as well and would be so careful when they were around his legs.

I believe that most racehorses are stallions. Except for mares of course. Just be carefull because you have that issue as well. Especially if you are planning on boarding. Around here most of boarding facilities will not board a stallion.

Also, you should make sure the horse is vetted. Because racehorses start training so young their bones are not fully strengthened and they strengthen themselves based on the amount of training. If the streghthening process falls behind the training that causes damage to the carpal bone and if not rested could cause osteoarthritis. So depending what you want to do with the horse (jumping etc. ) that could play a part in the horses performance.
