Space, equipment, shelter, farriers, vets, a good feed supply, access to good hay, medical things to take care of injuries or illness, ability to care for them in general.

My first thing I do is make sure I have a quarentine spot for newbies..not to make my others ill...lord only knows what some rescues have and whre they have been...other than that
feed
medicine
penicillin for the really sick ones..
theres a huge list I use,but most auction horses look pretty healthy depending on where you go..here anyway....rescues I have , have been truly neglected, no food no water...just becareful what you bring home...do some research, on what you will need...good luck ...

Ok here is my list. Now these are just the things that I use regulaly and couldn't imagine not having. I just do a little rescueing now and then, and it took me a long time to rack up the things I have. Most of it came from auctions.

Several full sets of brushes (Keep a set or two fro the healthy horses and a set or two for the new horses.)
Lots of extra halters and leads.
Lots of good hay
Lots of space
Nice warm shelters
Several different feeds
Several different size needles, and syringes
Penicillin
Dosage syringes
Towels
Blankets ( like people blankets.)
Horse Blankets of all shapes and sizes
Ichthamol (sp?)
Fura- Zone (Spray and cream)
Corona Ointment (the cream)
Peroxcide
Rubbing Alchole
Fly Masks of all shapes and sizes
Lots of fly spray
Extra Bridles
Extra Saddles
Extra Saddle pads
Lounge lines
Cottons
Leg wraps
Rolls Of Cotton
Shipping boots
Flash lights (Trust me one investment you will never regret.lol)
Tons of different bits

And thats all I can think of right now. I'm sure I've forgotten some things. I'll add as I remember.

This will be my very first horse. It's been my dream ever since I was little to rescue a boney horse. I do have a couple of halters, brushes, ect. DO you think I could buy as I need it? I'd get the basic cut cleaners first of course. I have been holding off a saddle until i know the horse I am getting, I have blankets and stuff like that.... I have enough to keep and 'normal' horse looked after very well. I'd buy the additional stuff as I needed it. Could I do that?

Do you understand that most rescues have issues? I am concerned that not having owned a horse before you may have un-realistic expectations about this horse. Please read some of the previous heat breaking rescue stories. I am not saying this to be rude but to help you understand that you have to pick the right horse to rescue to be successful. Some horses are not the best candidates for a first time horse... let alone a rescue horse.

I love your spirit and your idea... I am just concerned that you may be overwhelmed and hurt due to lack of previous experience. I would want this to be a positive first horse experience not a traumatic first horse experience where lots and lots of time and money are spent and then the horse still has to be put down.

Do you have a friend who can go to the sale with you to look the horses over and help show you problems and things that are better to stay away from? There are lots of horses who just need more groceries so in that regard they might not be a "real" rescue but for your first horse it might be a better candidate.

I do understand completely that most rescue do not have happy endings. It just kinda something that itching at my mind, you know? I think of getting a nice healthy happy horse but I just can't push the word rescue out of my mind.
