Your a reall Sweet heart for wanting to rescue a horse. But like above posters say Have everything planned and have everything you need to keep this horse healthy and happy. Looks like you got pretty much everything. I have posted my Rescue horse a few threads down. make sure you know what your heading into It will be a long road to get a sick Beaten starved ect, horse to a full recovery. I got my horse december 2006 and he is still not fully recovered. still some issues with people and still having vets come down to help heal him. I dont for a second regret rescuing him. He loves me and I love him. he trys his very best for me and Spend money like you wouldnt belive on him and vet bills. but its good for him and me, Bring a expert down to steer you away from horses that are no good or may end up having to be put down. maybe go to some rescue centers to take a look at some. there has to be some rescue farms where you are from. I hope you find a perfect horse for you. Congrats on you for even thinking of rescuing a horse. good to kno there are awesome caring people out there. |

The OP wanted to know about the isues surrounding adopting a rescue, and BW was simply expounding on one of them. I am not sure what it was about the post that influenced your response. Kristina

I find it interesting that you want to say that most horses who have become emaciated do not have issues. I have found from all the years of working at a sale barn and with a vet that this is just not true. Many horses have issues. They may have feed issues, mental issues, medical issues, etc. I lumped them together... surely you are not going to tell me that there were not concerns that needed to be specially addressed on a horse that is a one on the scale. You cannot just start feeding a horse that has been starved... to me that is an issue. A horse with worms ... has an issue... IMHO. Sorry not sure what you are talking about to say that rescue horses for the most part do not have issues.... Please elaborate from your personal experience... and just one horse is not a very wide spectrum to say most...

My girl Moondust who I rescued does have issues. She has the grass is greener on the other side syndrome from being starved for so long. Over time it has gotten a whole LOT better! A few moths after I got her when she started gaining her weight back and feeling her oats she was breaking out of her yard when she lived on my friends property taking down fences, even with hay constantly threr for her to eat just for the grass on the other side because that was was she got used to having to do to eat before I got her. Heck, she had to be cut out of a mesquite tree because she had climbed in on just to eat the leaves off of it. She caused alot of damage at her place as a result. I felt so bad because she caused so much damage there, but was still glad that she never got herself hurt doing it. She did get herself pregnant though as a result of her many break outs!
