Rescues to cheer for

I thought I would start a thread for people to post links to the rescues they recommend to others. I'll start with one of my favorites, The Kindness Ranch. The Kindness Ranch is a sanctuary for rehabilitation of ex-laboratory animals in southeast WY.

http://www.kindnessranch.org/home.html

The ranch was founded by Dr. David Groobman and is rather unique, set up for student interns and guests to stay in guest quarters. Some of the animals are rehabilitated and available for adoption. Check it out!

I have to submit tbfriends. They work with sooo many horses every year, and really try to find them new homes. Everyday they have a new blog up about how the last day went...

I would have to say Helping Hands Equine Rehab and Rescue in South Dakota. I have volunteered there a number of times, and they truly are a god send for some of the horses they get in and have placed.

Misfit Acres is also a great place, located in MN. Although they are a sanctuary and not a rescue, they have helped a number of horses.

Great Expectations Ranch in Pillager, MN

I have never been to their facility or met them, but based on photos alone of what they have done with horses, I would definately recommend them.

My parents adopted a mare from Helping Hands in 2007. They seemed like nice people when they dropped the mare off, and seem like they have a lot of nice horses that just need some TLC. I personally think they could have done things differently feed/supplement wise with the mare my parents adopted, and been a little more specific and exact about the extent of her arthritis. But I guess a resuce can only do so much.

I have heard and seen the file of the mare you speak of. That was a sad situation from what I have heard. She did have arthritis in her left hip and leg, basically the entire left side she limped on. From what the previous owner had stated and what was seen when the rescue got her, it did not appear to be that bad as she could still get around fairly well. You are right, a rescue can only do so much especially when you do not actually witness the horse being in any pain or discomfort. However, every single rescue in the country has its ups and downs, and if someone says otherwise, there is something wrong. That is JMHO

I have personally dealt with and highly recommend St. Francis Horse Rescue & Retirement Home, Inc out of Rosholt, WI. They are a wonderful organization that unfortunately does not get nearly enough recognition or publicity.

I second Great Expectations Ranch there about 40 miles from here and I know Sue and Brooke very well. Great people and they do a wonderful job with the horses.

I agree. I think it is fantastic that people care so much to take in the "unwanted" horses and the ones that are just in a situation that they can no longer be properly cared for.
My parents spoke to the previous owners, and said she seemed like a very nice lady and really wanted what was best for Jacsy.
We did all we could for her...she was on grass hay (as much as she wanted, fed three times per day), senior feed (three times a day), rice bran, and an arthritis supplement, and on her really sore days some bute...but she did have pretty severe arthritis, with little flexion, in the left rear hip, stifle, and fetlock areas, and an limited amount of flexion in both of her fronts (especially the left). But yes, she gimped her way around pretty well. It was laying down, getting back up, and trimming her hooves that were especially difficult.
She was a great mare and we really enjoyed the time that we did have with her....lots of scratches, boy did that mare love to be scratched on, and treats. She was also a great teacher/babysitter for a black filly she was pastured with. And we felt so bad for her (Emily, the filly) when Jacsy was put down, Emily just wasn't herself for a good week or so afterwards.

Anyways...sorry for straying from the OP a bit.

I support www.tendermercy.com
They are awesome. They take in all types of horses, old and young. They try to find a good 'match' for all the available horses, and.......most importantly. They are HONEST about what they know about the horse. They are located near Buffalo, NY if anyone is close by and looking for a good horse.
She gives 100% of whatever care is needed for each horse that comes in.
