I'm glad she didn't show up!! If she couldn't afford to feed them before, she probably STILL can't afford to feed them. She doesn't need to get them back.

What is sad is that in MANY states she would have gotten them back or will get them back once they are fat again. There is no place for horses like this to go and often once they are fat again the judge will return them to the owner.

A friend of mine here in MO used to rescue feed until the last time she got really burned as she was never paid (as in reimbursed for all the feed she spent which was in the contract with the rescue she worked for) and the judge let the woman who starved the horses have them back. Also in many states those that care for rescue horses cannot legally adopt them. This is to prevent those who might intentionally let a horse go then report it so they can adopt it.

It is very sad.

I feel bad for the horses, and I'm glad they're getting the care they need.

I also agree that the issue of slaughter is often times related to neglect; however, I don't think this sounds like one of those cases. It says that this person has had horses seized from her before, but she either got all those back or got new ones. She sounds like more of a delusional horse lover gone wild than somebody who is going to dump her animals to kill buyers when she can't afford to keep them. She sounds more like an animal hoarder to me.

FYI- there is NO vet or vet check required at our monthly horse auction. There used to be a livestock inspector but funding ran short and they only have livestock inspectors for abuse or neglect cases.

Well, for me that says it all. A caring owner would show up. Or if they couldn't, they'd send someone in their place.

in defense

The owner has never been "busted before ". I happen to know the person in question and the reason she didn't appear in court was because she was in labor, had a baby the next day. I have purchased a horse from this woman, and can attest to the state the horses are in. If you notice there are only a couple of horses pictured on the article. One of them is a 16 yr old former stallion, ( she finally gelded him a couple of years ago because he walks off all his weight) his stall walking behavior didn't change unfortunately... he is impossible to keep weight on. The grey colt in the picture didn't look that thin to me, ( I have only seen the footage, same as you folks). and I have heard the grey horse is a mare that they pulled the baby off when they seized the horses. I have seen mares get that thin from giving everything they have to the baby. I had a mare that I boarded at a stable who looked like that when she was nursing her filly. The BO was sick, she couldn't stand the way my mare looked, but, she was giving her everything she could think of to keep weight on momma. Thing is momma was shiny and incredibly healthy, just thin. Same scenario I figure... those were the only horses I saw pictures of, now, if any of you before going and making snap judgements, have any other facts or even scenarios that you can say you saw these horses this thin, please speak up. Otherwise, " but for the grace of God, there go I". This has all the appearances of a "witchhunt" in my mind. This is a sensationalistic spin by the media, so they can "scoop a story". There are some more horses the owner has, now, why can she keep them and have the rest of these horses seized? Because, the horses that she still has aren't worth as much as the horses that were seized is where I put my money...

oh yeah, I forgot to mention, when I said this person has never been "busted " before, means that both the seizures happened within weeks of each other, so there is no history of neglect. As far as charges, there are none, no matter what that wade guy says, I have yet to see any charges she is facing. Now, the MN hooved animal usually have a "BIG" seizure right about this time of the year, it makes that papers and then whammo, all kinds of cash and goods starts floating in by people like you and I who care and want to help out the rescue ( that is already filled to capacity, mind you) that is doing such a good thing. Now, what if these horses have been sick? ( with vet reports to prove it?) What are they possibly bringing into the mn hooved rescue? Why seize these horses? There was hay there and water. Well, I wonder what these Straight Egyptian Al Kamsa, Blue List horses might be worth to someone who REALLY wants them,? I hope this is all food for thought folks...Please don't judge until you have seen all the facts and heard from both sides of the issue at hand.

This is the kind of thing that scares me the most Luckyducky.
People like this being brought up to raise the coffers. Like waving a steak at dogs so they come running.
Keep us posted would you?
I am following something much much bigger in Michigan, same thing happening there, but bigger fish are getting involved now.
