Rescue and Adopt

I'm thinking about adopting a rescue horse and I'm trying to find a place near me. Also...I don't know too much about rescue horses(I am just starting to learn) I wondered if you could give me hints and pros and cons about one. Just so I could get another person's view on it.
Thanks,
Julia

First question: How much experience do you have with horses in general? I don't think rescue is typically something for inexpereinced horse owners...I wouldn't reccomend it.

A rescue can have a lot of mental/physical problems, you want to be an experienced horseman/women to deal with them.

Also.. check with your local humane society for adoptions.

They only do dogs and cats.. I have neen riding for 3 1/2 years and i go up to a barn about once a week maybe twice. I'm just considering it the idea, nothing for sure. Yea, it would be hard...I inderstand that....I'm just looking into that's all.

Well, in my honest opinion, I do not believe horse rescue is for first time horse owners. I worked at barns for 10 years or more before I got my "own" horse...I even leased several horses...but I cannot begin to tell you how much I'm STILL learning about ownership and proper care. I think it is FANTASTIC that you want to help abused and neglected horses...but I think you should stear clear of it until you are more experienced...otherwise you are probably doing the "rescued" horse further disservice. Sorry if that isn't what you wanted to hear...I've just been there and know how hard it is to deal with a "rescue" with health, behavioral and emotional problems.

Good luck!

Don't be discouraged by these posts, there are alot of well trained horses out there that need someone to ride them. Just because it is a rescue doesn't mean it is a wild untrained horses, most of them are neglected, so they are either have injuries that haven't been treated or not fed. Look on the rescue web link thread, and you might find one close to you. good luck

Absolutly. I'm sorry if I made it sound like there aren't any out there for you. I just want to stress my caution about getting something you aren't prepared to handle. I would venture to guess that 90% of rescues will have additional problems to deal with. As I said already, I think its great that you are considering this as an option..... just do your homework first!

actually there are some(quite a few in the area of ohio where i live) horses who end up in rescues who have no issues, health or behavioral, who would be great for first time owners. sometimes they are simply older, or if you live in an amish area then the amish often get rid of their horses who can't go quite as fast and far with a buggy as they need them to. some of the horses are also given up for financial reasons. these good 'first time' horses aren't the majority though, but if you wish to find one then it just takes time and patience. go through a rescue that you can trust, and visit and ride the horse many many times before you decide on anything. good luck with whatever you decide, and be careful! keep us updated!

here is a great link for rescues all over the US, and just google PA horse rescues, that should come up with a lot. http://www.equinerescue.info/links.html

O I will. Thanks everyone. I will take all of your suggestions and other things like that into consideration. That's what I asked for anyways. I saved that website you gave me HappyJoy and thanks so much for the suggestion.
Thanks!
