I was on vacation for a few days and I met this lady out walking her arab mare. She was telling me that a local vetrinarian had perfected a procedure to remove mare's ovaries. Apparently this eliminates heat cycles, or something. Anyone heard of this? Is it safe? I guess I could do my own research, but I'm too lazy.

I've heard of it being done but apparently it is a complicated procedure because of the animals size(that's what I was told) I would only get it done if my horse had such a huge problem that if she got pregnant that like th foal would DIE.

I know, I wouldn't do it either. I don't have enough money. *laughs*

I have. The woman who did this to her TB mare described it as having the "oomph" of a mare without the moodiness. She was a really nice girl. Supposedly it didn't take too long either. I think the original reason was due to an infection of some sort.

Hmm.. I could see it being good if you really had an issue with moodiness. But just because? I'm not sure. The lady's mare seemed pretty well behaved to me. I hope she wasn't going to do it just because she could.

Removing ovaries, in ANY animal has it's "hormonal lacking" risk. Certain cancers are prevented, however, certain cancers can kick into high gear. it is not done lightly from my knowledge. A mare with TRUE hormonal issues and the ovaries are over producing, a vet will remove them if he cannot suppress them with other meds. But for the local show person who wants to save a few bucks on Regumate, I highly doubt you'll find a vet to jump at that one.

I don't know. This lady seemed serious about it and I didn't see any major issues with her mare. She was a well behaved horse. I was thinking the same thing, how could she find a vet so willing to do it on a normal horse. Hmm.. strange.
