Reining Question...

I was watching some videos on youtube and there were a lot of freestyle reining videos. I was wondering, is there a difference between reining and freestyle reining?

In Reining there is a pattern you have to follow. In freestyle you get to make your own pattern up and do the pattern with music.

Oh ok. It looks fun! Do they have like seperate shows for reining and freestyle reining or will they have both at one show?

Can't you have costumes too as well? Some of the videos of freestyle I've seen has had the rider and horse dressed up. I LOVE watching freestyle.

Depends on the show and how it is set up. Some have patterned reining on one day and freestyle on the next, some have both at the same time in separate arenas, some have one after the other, some only have freestyle, others only have patterned reining

Oh and yes some people wear costumes .

Have you seen the Stacey Westfall freestyle reining where she is bridleless and bareback. It is amazing, actually brings tears to your eyes. There is one version where it is set to Tim McGraw's - Live Like You were dying song and the performance is dedicated to her dad who had passed away a month or so before. You have to watch it, gives you chills. The horse is licking his lips the whole time. Let me know if you can't find it and I will attempt to find the thread on Sat.

Its actually in the training section right now. The title is like "this is one trained horse" or something along those effects.

There is a lot of leeway in aq freestyle, but I believe that certain elements must be performed - what these are for sure, I dont know. I do know that there was a guy at congress in the late 90's who was a family favorite and was DQ in a fantastic freestyle performance because he omitted an element. I do know that it is not a point class, they usually get money, at least in the pro (open) class. Ammys and kids do it, too, but I dont know about the money thing there.
