Wink Red Dun, Bay Dun and Brown Dun (of course IMO)

Took these today of the horses and couldn't have found a better illustration of the difference in color. (sorry they're so big, but need to be able to see)

The bay and brown dun are both 2 year olds and the red dun is mature.

On the far left is a bay dun, on the right is a brown dun and in between in the back is a red dun.

Same, left bay dun, middle red dun and front brown dun.

Far left is either a smokey black dun or a deep brown dun (need to test for cream and agouti, haven't done so yet but those are color probabilities due to pedigree) 2nd from left bay dun, head and body behind is red dun and front is brown dun.

I need to get them all together when caught up and line them up, but this was pretty good for comparison, IMO.

Those are excellent pictures illustrating the variations of dun coat colour.

Thanks for sharing them!

Take care.

Could I possibly see a shot of the dorsal on the red dun?

Thanks for sharing.

Yep, he does not have a "flaxen" mane or tail though, LOL, but he threw almost all dun babies for years before I gelded him :

It's not a very dark stripe is it? He's also "pinker" and less "goldish". Interesting.

Thank you very much. :-D

DANG COMPUTER ATE MY LONG THREAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OK, once again:

Actually, it is a very dark stripe. Those pictures were taken late in the afternoon without true light. I went out at 12 noon today and took them again in true light with no clouds or shadows on the back. Forgive the mud, we had 75mph winds last night and rain like crazy. Also, I got more than just him, so you all will have to put up with lot's of pictures, LOL.

Flash - red dun no flaxen:

This is also another red dun, Cowboy. He is a late foal (November) so he is currently a yearling. He *might* be flaxen, but I don't think so, however, he has LOTS of white guard hairs in his mane and tail. The white you see is WHITE guard hairs. Also, note the dorsal. It has a "body colored" stripe running through it. It is a true color stripe and not hair laying different. Odd.
First picture taken yesterday later afternoon, he is on the left. The next two were today at 12.

Then Kelsey, brown dun, just turned 2:

Now Plano, 4 year old Grullo. He also has a lot of "body color" guard hairs in his mane and tail. First picture taken yesterday late afternoon, the next two today at 12.

He is on the left.

Mares next post.

Ok this is ZZ, bay dun mare just turned 2. First picture taken yesterday late afternoon. Next two taken today at 12 noon. She also has LOTS of cream colored guard hairs in mane and tail.:

Now Mo. Mo is 4 years old: OOPS, looking at papers she is 5. She is the one I REALLY need to test. She "should" be a grullo, but I think she is actually brown dun or smokey black grullo (also works with her pedigree. Dad is a grullo and mom is listed as a sorrel, but she's out of a palomino and a brown, and the brown goes back to a gray and chestnut but they go back to : gray - sorrel and roan: chestnut - dun and brown. And when I researched her "sorrel" mom, she threw almost exclusively "brown" foals.) Anyway, LOL, this is Mo (ignore the "light colored right side (left in pictures, that's just dried mud, LOL):

Isn't she interesting?
