That is very interesting Haas... I had just been saying on somewhere else that I RARELY see a black based dun with much, if any, white. I was wondering if dun might be a bit of a white suppressor, especially when combined with a black base... or of maybe a white suppressor travels with dun sometimes.

I was just trying to help him fit in. You have brown dun, red dun, bay dun, purple dun, why not let him be a part of the club . Geesh, not feeling the love tonite.

Your all making me wish I had a dun, lol. Best I've got is a sorrel with countershading and dark hocks.

How interesting to see the different duns! Thanks for posting those.

She is, isn't she. And yes, the bay dun mare is "wild" with her points, but no, there is no possibility of Buckskin. Saw dad and he was deffinately a bay dun. I'll have to see if I still have the picture. And dam was a sorrel out of all sorrels/chestnuts.

Here is a pic I took yesterday... but I realize now after seeing yours that the angle was bad... it's due to rain tomorrow so I probably won't go out, but if I make it out on Sunday I'll try to remember to get a pic from the angle you took yours:

Oh and... transverse striping or is it just my eyes?:

Sorry... don't intend to steal your thread... lol.

Don't worry, I don't mind when it's more horse pictures. But, your girls dorsal appears very undefined to me. Which is why IMO it looks chestnut with countershading. Sorta like my Gray who also has NO dun in his pedigree:

What did you color test for?

There could be a reason for that... not genetic related.

When showing horses in dun factor classes you are penalized for white so for many years people have tried to breed for little or no white. Several horses I have team penned with were cool... they were four white stockings and a large blaze on black. Sorry no photos...

LOL I have had several black based duns with lots of white...

Both these mares also have belly spots one has three whites on the feet and the other has two... unfortunately I do not have any other photos handy.

And know others that have them...

Well I think part of why it looks undefined is because she seems to have a layer of sooty over it. Sometimes the sooty goes away and it looks more defined. From some angles all you see is a smudgy, sooty look, then others you don't see the sooty as much (almost like it's sheer or something) and the dorsal is VERY defined. She has lots of sooty marbling all over and I really wonder if it disguises some things.

I tested for cream, dun, and LWO.
