The bay and brown dun are both 2 year olds and the red dun is mature.

On the far left is a bay dun, on the right is a brown dun and in between in the back is a red dun.

So does that make the far right one a yellow dun?

Thanks for all the pics! That was REALLY fun! I love duns. I was intrigued to see that I still consider those reds duns stripes somewhat light. I guess possibly because THIS is the only red dun I have ever seen in person. Lots of bay duns and grullo/as, but this is the only red. LOL:

So anyway... I find it REALLY interesting how strikingly similar their body tones and even their manes and tail are to Lacy. The dorsal stripe shade and even shape is very similar to hers as well. Hmph. I sent hair off on her today so I guess I'll have some sort of answer soon. :-)

Anybody else with duns they want to share? I love this topic.

Oh also wanted to say your possible grulla/o is interesting. Also... is the bay dun possibly wild bay or is that just still the young points? Any chance of dunskin on that one either?

Here is a pic I took yesterday... but I realize now after seeing yours that the angle was bad... it's due to rain tomorrow so I probably won't go out, but if I make it out on Sunday I'll try to remember to get a pic from the angle you took yours:

Oh and... transverse striping or is it just my eyes?:

Sorry... don't intend to steal your thread... lol.

The thing to remember is lighting and time of day and time of year can all play a part in the color. Body clipping also plays a part. Your horse in the OP looks body clipped. IMHO This would be a more accurate photo of that horse. LOL

I have had them that dark and very light also but I do not consider them to be flaxen if there is not enough light hair to get palomino papers! Many red duns have light hairs mixed in much like the bay duns have frosting... we would not consider frosting to be flaxen would we? Also interesting to note... with the silver gene you see flaxen on bay and black... but I thought you had posted that it can only be on a red based horse... Did I miss understand that?

These are bay dun...

Here is a red dun body clipped...and the same horse at Congress several weeks before... Then in various times of her life...

Here is dun vs dun with cream.

Here is red dun summer and winter...

Also thought I would add a couple of photos of the same 2nd horse taken inside vs outside. This is the gelding that DB posted photos of ... when he was younger and still a stallion.

I really doubt that... if DB has a champagne she is holding out on me. I bet that is a palomino gelding... :-)

Well I guess that's all a matter of a opinion Haas. That might be a better shot of him to show his body color... but it is NOT a better shot of him to show how dark his dorsal stripe is... which WAS my point.

Flaxen does not express on black based horses... light colored manes and tails of silvers (on black based horses) are caused by the silver gene... not the flaxen gene... even though it might look the same. And no... I know what guard hairs/frosting is and that is NOT flaxen imo. However I do know that flaxen can exist on red duns so I'm not sure of your point about the guard hairs/frosting.
