Angry rearing and bucking when walking side by side!

It all started when I broght my horse B.J. home ( 5 days ago), when i walk or ran at her side she start to rear and buck and try to hurt me. I yell at her and make her run laps in her paster to tell her whos boss. I am i doing the right thing? If not what am i doing wrong?

Thanks,
Rachel

Uhm... are you talking to yourself?
I would say you are doing the right thing, I would do some round pen work with her.

Make a small section of the paddock, or a fenced arena.
Just somewhere small where you can work with her.
Sounds like it could be a domance issue, you're doing the right thing in making her work for you.
But, why are you running at her side?
She's probably thinking your some sort of predator expecially since you've only had her for a week, she needs time to get to know you before you work on trust issues like running at her. Just imo

Round pen work, deff. I agree with everyone else. Also, theres a type of halter, I totally forgot what it's called, someone said it was like a western halter (no Idea if that has anything to do with it) Wait, Rope halter? It has a long lead line. A friend of mine does that with her mare, makes her do circles with the Rope halter on. When u swing the lead rope around, your horse is suposto go faster and slower. If the horse stops you take your energy and swing the rope harder. It's really hard to describe w/o being there to show you. We do this with and without a round pen. Also, ask a trainer or a professional for some help. I watched a trainer and I learned all this great stuff. Good luck!

Use a small pen or a longe line.. I would prefer a pen so you can approach and move away without having to adjust your hold on him/her.

I just read an article on this in "Your Horse" magazine. It is too long to type in full but the basic idea is

Lead on a long rope and make lots of changes of direction to make your horse focus

What it also says is that if your horse invades your space stop and wave the rope at her. Once she is at a respectful distance reward with a rub on the head

Use lots of little turns to keep her thinking and encourage her to stay with you

Lots of subtle moves to reposition her and teach her where she needs to be all the time

I am sorry this is so abbreviated but I'm sure you get the idea

First, is she on a lead of any kind when she does this? Most horses, when you walk next to them freely, they want to play, and that is their way of playing with other horses. Either that or they think you are hurting them. But usually they bolt.

IF on the lead, SLAM them BACKWARDS as hard and as fast as you can! As soon as they start snaking their head (most snake their head first before doing the rest).

The biggest thing is training. Is he young? Sounds like it. He is either playing or spooking from you. NEVER assume the last owner did ANYTHING like that with them. Always start with a new horse and learn where their limits are. you have found one of his limits.

LUNGING is a big thing to do if you do not have a pen. Carry a crop and have him on a LONG lunge line when you work him walking or trotting. As he begins to act out, BACK HIM UP, and work him in a circle forward. BOTH Directions. Then bring him to a stop, and begin again. he will learn that the behavior is NOT acceptable.

The crop is mainly if he gets close enough to strike or won't back up, You can pop him on the chest to get him to move.

The biggest issue, WHAT are you trying to accomplish with him at this moment?
