I have met a few horses that reared in my time, and most of them were just testing the dominance. Most of the "disengaging" type of stuff worked. There was one (isn't there always?) that seemed determined to KILL with those flying hooves, though. Talk about a TWO HOUR LONG BATTLE for dominance. After trying to get this horse to respond to everything else, the big guns came out. He reared, the trainer jumped away and out from the horse, and hauled on that leadline, pulling the horse back and over. Eight times, this happened. The horse (not a stud, a gelding) finally showed less and less ornery-ness. Now, granted, this was an extreme case. If we hadn't fixed this problem, he was dog food. We were his last chance, and we had tried EVERYTHING. Six months later, he was a decent trail horse for an intermediate rider. In this case, that "abuse" saved his life... (Naturally, yanking a horse over like that is NOT a first resort, nor is it done just anywhere. It is DANGEROUS!)

Some people can use a chain effectively and some can't

It's not always a people problem....some horses REALLY don't like it, and as III Bars said there are some considerable saftey risks.

One of my horses will fight to the death when a chain is involved. Just his personal "clinker in his thinker."

I agree 100%. When the old owner was trying to load Hope to haul her to my barn she resisted, so he put a chain over her nose. I said, and I quote "I really don't think the chain will be needed. Just give her a light pop on the rump with a switch or a lunge whip and she'll probably jump right in" but what did I know?
Anyway, he pulled one time with that chain on her nose and she almost sat on the ground trying to get away from it. His MIL went and got a lunge whip and guess what? It took just showing it to her and lightly touching her butt with it and she walked right into the trailer like I said she would LOL!

I very much agree with this and this is what is really wrong with going to a gun fight with a knife.

Many people think that they can just "Ramp up" a little and the horse will cave in to this submissive little pony.
It can go the other way more times than not and the handler is left with looking for a bigger tool.

The cycle has been started.
You ramp up and the horse raises your hand.
You see the raise and up it some more.

The simplest things can just turn into a fist fight and EVERYONE looses.

Sorry ...not training.

Why is everyone so ready to argue? I was refering to an earlier post about people being to harsh with a chain and doing more damage than good. I'm aware that some horses just will not respond to a chain but that was NOT was I was getting at.

This is for you muck:

What works for different people and different horses IS training. I have seen it work on MANY horses including my filly. As previously stated, it only took once or twce and the problem was solved. She doesn't rear anymore and instead stops to think about it when something scares her. So you are telling me that is not training? It worked didn't it? Just because it isn't the kind of training you would use does not mean it is not training. And I would agree that MOST average horse people would not be able to manage using a chain in that manner without causing worse problems but it works for me. My chain has since been retired and just sits around catching dust. My horses respect me enough to know that I am not going to hurt them but that misbehaving WILL. I have never had a "fist" fight with either of my horses. Now obviously if I were training someone else's horse this wouldn't work so wonderfully because I would have no relationship with it. I promise I am not some idiot with a horse, I have years and years of experience, good and bad, and I have learned from it.

To me, the bottom line is: For behavior such as rearing, an IMMEDIATE response is required. Sir Henry tried to rear once. My response was an immediate and swift wack with the whip. Just once.

IMHO, taking a horse to a round pen, or anything the like after it reared, is a slow response. By the time the horse stands in the pen, it will have forgotten why it's there.
