Just pull it. Whatever you do, DO NOT cut the mane. It'll grow back uneven and gross.

ye, don't cut it! I tried...trust me not worth it. It's uneven now, was choppy and poofy before....never looked good. hahhaa but my horses would never tolerate pulling..so I am outta luck. Do you have any horse hand guide books? They usually give a demenstration(spelling?) how with pictures.

pulling the main doesnt always hurt, some horses are more sensitive but most dont mind at all. try pulling really little bits first and see how it goes. its a better plan than a solo comb as this will make it thicker. when you pull you basically take a long piece of hair, preferably from underneath, and backcomb the rest so that the piece you are holding is singled out. you then wrap it around a mane comb and pull quickly. you might want to brush the main realy well first as it will be more difficult and painful if it is knotty. see how you get on

I always band it and leave it in for a week, then redo it. It breaks the hairs and makes it thinner. But I would leave that as a last resort, Sammy flips if we try to pull and his manes so thick it broke my thinning blade.

Pulling actually doesn't hurt. . .horse's crests are made up of a layer of fat. .(no matter how muscled your horse is. . lol) and while the horse night dislike the pressure, it doesn't really hurt.
I agree that pulling is the best way to go. Cutting a short, thick mane, even the "natural looking" way, would result in catastrophic disaster. :P
