This morning around 11 I woke up because my dog was barking (yes I slept until 11, i had been working until 3 AM)...my neighbor was poking around in my barn with my horses. I waited until she left and went out to do morning chores.
Of course she picked the ONE morning this week that I chose to sleep in, and it had been about two days since I had time to pick out the stalls and throw down more bedding, so there was a bucket's worth of frozen poopie in each stall. She basically caught me at the worst POSSIBLE time.
While I was out there feeding and picking stalls like I do every Saturday morning, she came back to tell me how concerned she was about my horses, that it was 11 AM and they hadn't been fed, and that they were all so skinny, it just made her so sad, and why don't I feed them more? I was kind of appalled by this.
I feed my horses each 15 lbs of hay a day, 2 lbs of alfalfa pellets, 1 lb of BOSS, and 1.5 lbs of Enrich 32.
Yes, they all have fairly unappealing toplines but I think that's because they have not been worked since last October. I get to ride about 2x a month because of the weather, so of course they aren't going to be all muscular. You can feel their ribs but not see them. So as far as I can tell they are out of shape, but not particularly skinny. Her horses on the other hand have huge hay bellies and very cresty necks.
So please. You be the judge. Here are some photos, all taken in the last month or two. Tell me if I'm a horrible horse mommy. I love my horses and want the best for them.
