just a little wake up call for me last night... i will do a condensed version (ha!) and a longer version with the whole night of greattttt happenings.... [condensed] me and one of my mums friends invited us over for dinner, and she took me out of a trail ride- we rode 2 brother Arabian geldings. while out of the trail- her horse-AyenSur stepped on a rattlesnake- I wouldnt have noticed if the snake hadnt of been making a ton of noise. i waited for the snake to pass, and we moved on. we didnt think he had been bit- untill a minute or so later... He was limping- wouldnt walk. and we panicked. it was already starting to get dark.. and she had me ride the next mile and a half or so of trail /alone/... it was dark.. scary... and everything sounds like snakes after that. i finally did get help though. and she walked Ayensur back home- the vet couldnt help him though- but from what i heard- he is doing fine this morning, and is still standing. im lucky that the horse i was riding, dancer, can do those trails in his sleep. new found respect for arabians. LONG version... my moms friends invited us to go to dinner last night at their house. they said we could go for a trail ride- but we only ended up having 2 horses, so only me and one of my moms friends ( 'D' ) went trail riding. I rode Dancer- a /THIRTY/ year old ex-endurance Arabian gelding. Great horse! and she rode his brother, AyenSur- a 29 y/o arabian. Both are great horses- and could do the trail we went on in their sleep. After watching ayensur's owner go through the most complete grooming session ever- we finally went back, and tacked up dancer. My first time riding and endurance horse- in an endurance(and treeless) saddle ((SO COMFY!)) We mounted up, and continued on our ride- she did kind of treat me like a newbie to horses- but i think she got the message after awhile that i knew what i was doing, and was totally comfortable doing everything. BUT- dun dun dun duuuuhhhh- we were about half way through the trail ride, it was getting dark, but no big deal. Untill ayensur stepped on a rattle snake. i only noticed the snake because i was behind a pace or so, and te snake was really PO'd from being stepped on I let the snake pass, and we continued. we were all good for about a minute... Untill AyenSur started limping. D told me to go ahead on the trail... alone. In the dark. I am a very confident rider, and i had the best horse as my mount... but- im not going to lie- it in the scariest thing doing unmarked, and a trail i have never done alone in the dark. Dancer took the best care of me...even though he could tell i was uneasy. I trotted him where i could, and cantered on flat parts. at the end of that never-ending trail, i finally saw the huge house, and cantered up the drive, but no one was out there, so i went back to D's house and told her husband and my mum that ayensur had been bitten. when D finally came back, Ayensur's front left leg was crazy-swollen.. but he had a good amount of betamine(i think?) and he was loaded into the /faulty/ trailer- only after does the vet tell us not to come. we did all we could. so far- he is still standing, but is still swollen. we wont know much for about another week about how his future will go. just a wake up call in general. Thursday July 2nd at about 10am, Ayensur passed away. he competed in many endurance rides and had a great life. he made many happy, and gave them his all. the vet said that he had atleast 3 different bites, from probably multiple snakes... and that Dancer was dang lucky to not have been bitten even once. it was too much venom for such an old horse. rest in peace.

Wow! That is really scary. I hope he pulls through, and is all right. And hopefully you won't have to ride trails in the dark by yourself. =\ Sounds scary. Definatly gunna think of him. Keep us updated.

One of my horses was bitten by a rattlesnake just a few weeks ago. She was bitten on her right hind down by the hoof. Her entire leg was amazingly swollen. I gave her bute and cold hosed her leg a couple of times a day for several days. The vet also gave her an antibiotic. The swelling was gone and she was fine in about a week. Her leg didn't explode Glad the horses didn't panic and you two are OK.
